Advanced Content and Learning Specialist (Senior Managing Editor)


The team

A part of Pearson’s Learning Services (Publishing) department, the 'Vocational, Business, Creative and Practical' team develops high quality teaching and learning resources and services for customers in UK schools, FE colleges and other training organisations. We provide support for vocational qualifications such as Pearson’s flagship BTECs as well as for Apprenticeships, Functional Skills and, in the future, T Levels. Our publishing remit also includes GCSEs and A levels in Business, Creative and Practical subjects. At present our main focus is on supporting vocational qualifications, where we publish in a wide range of subject areas, from Applied Science and Health and Social Care to Engineering, IT, Sport and Childcare.

You would be working within a matrix team, with people from many different job functions - editorial, design, digital, sales, marketing and qualifications product management - coming together to create and launch brilliant resources that meet the needs of our various customers. The role can be based in either our Oxford or London offices and you would report into a member of the publishing / product management team.

The role

We are looking for an energetic and proactive person with well-developed editorial and content development skills and a passion for education to join our team. You will be part of a friendly, collaborative and high-performing team, working closely with our publishers to understand customer and learner needs and create great resources to support classroom delivery as well as independent learning. In this role you will contribute to the development of great market-winning ideas. You will be responsible for working with a range of suppliers to develop, deliver and quality assure those products and services to a high standard.

A day in the life of...

During a typical day you might engage in some of the following activities:

Market Understanding

  • Getting out into schools, colleges or work-based learning centres, testing sample materials with teachers and learners and making suggestions for improvements
  • Building your market understanding through contributing to and/or leading on research initiatives with teachers and learners

Proposition development and execution

  • Briefing writers on requirements for new projects
  • Attending/leading writer workshops to generate new and exciting content which meets the needs of learners and teachers
  • Reviewing content, ensuring it meets the brief
  • Working hands-on to develop briefs for freelancers to ensure they manage, edit and proofread materials to meet the needs of learners and teachers and ensure consistency across different manuscripts.
  • Quality checking freelance work
  • Briefing artwork or checking artwork briefs and working with our rights and permissions team to clear permissions where needed

Strategy and financial planning

  • With support, identifying new opportunities and commissioning titles accordingly.
  • With support, building a business case for a new product or service

You will also

  • manage a budget and schedule for your areas of responsibility, tracking against budget and schedule and using problem solving skills to ensure dates are met and budget is kept to.
  • contribute to team meetings, sharing best practice and learning from others
  • work with our digital team and editorial freelancers and suppliers to ensure resources are made available on our digital platforms and are checked thoroughly where needed
  • answer customer queries and write customer facing communications about brand
  • create and maintain relationships with schools and share findings from research widely within the team.


Who are we looking for?

A highly competent and organised editor who has a keen interest in education and is passionate about creating resources that help students make progress in their learning. You might also be interested

Someone who would enjoy working with a close team to develop exciting new resources in a wide range of subject areas and is equally willing to work autonomously and lead on their own area of responsibility.

  • Editorial experience and skills are critical
  • Proven organisational /project management skills with regards to delivery of content
  • Digital skills (the ability to work with technology teams to develop the digital part of propositions) are desirable
  • Educational publishing and/or teaching experience desirable (but not essential)

You might also be interested in gaining experience in commissioning content and building business cases, with a view to progressing your career into a ‘Publisher’ (Product Manager) role in the future. This will not be the core focus of this role, but there will be scope for you to develop this experience alongside your main responsibilities of managing content through the editorial and development stages.

We do require you to have experience of managing and briefing freelancers to edit content and of successfully managing editorial projects, have excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently and proactively within a team. Last but not least you need to have a positive and determined attitude to work.

You don’t need to have any prior experience in the Vocational education market, although we do like to hire people who have a genuine interest in this sector.No specific subject specialism is required, as you would be working across a range of different subject areas.
