Responsible to: The Professional Game Academy Audit Company (PGAAC) Board

Location: Attendance at PGAAC Board Meetings (London or via video-conference (as appropriate))

Commitment: Up to 10 days per annum

Remuneration: Competitive daily rate, plus expenses to be agreed

Overview

The Professional Game Academy Audit Company (PGAAC) was established in June 2019 by its comprising members, being the Premier League, the EFL and the English Football Association, with the following aims and primary objectives:

  1. to support the development of the world’s leading Academy system by providing independent quality assurance to all club Academies in the Professional Game;
  2. to act as the independent standards organisation, responsible for quality assuring all club Academies in the Professional Game;
  3. to raise standards, ensuring safe practice and compliance is in place across all Academies, through on-going qualitative assessments delivered by domain-specific assessors; and
  4. to assess Academies and to recommend to the Professional Game Board that they be awarded with a category ranking based on that assessment.

The Role

The role comprises the following responsibilities (without limitation):

Chair meetings of the PGAAC Board and, if nominated, its sub-committees effectively and efficiently, bringing impartiality and objectivity to the decision-making process;

Work closely with the General Manager and the Company Secretary to ensure that meetings are well planned, meaningful and reflect the responsibilities of the Board;

To ensure that the members of the Board receive accurate, timely and clear information about PGAAC’s performance, to enable the Board to take sound decisions, monitor performance effectively and to provide advice accordingly to promote the success of the Company;

Where appropriate, arranging informal meetings beforehand to enable thorough preparation for the discussion of any material issues in the board meetings and, critically, providing the Board members with sufficient time to consider material issues, ensuring they are not faced with unrealistic deadlines for decision-making;

Ensure that the members of the Board are fully involved and that decisions are taken in the best, long-term interests of the Company with the Board taking collective responsibility for the decisions that are made;

Ensure that the Board can regularly review material risks and associated opportunities, and to satisfy itself that processes and procedures are in place to take advantage of opportunities, and manage and mitigate the risks;

Ensure, in conjunction with and with support from the Company Secretary, that all matters discussed and agreed by the Board are properly recorded in the minutes;

Ensure that decisions taken at the meetings are implemented;

Ensure high standards of financial probity by the Company;

Foster and maintain constructive relationships with and between the Board and meeting members;

To ensure that the objectives of PGAAC, as agreed by the Board, are fully, promptly and properly carried out.

Requirements for the role

Skills and Abilities

Established reputation as a leader and strategic thinker in either commercial, private, voluntary or public-sector context;
Significant experience of operating at a senior level in a strategic capacity;
Ability in partnership working and relationship management;
Able to build and maintain strong, transparent relationships with key stakeholders;
Ability to support, challenge and manage a relationship with PGAAC Board Members and the General Manager.

Experience

Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation;
Successful track record of achievement throughout their career;
Significant experience of chairing meetings and events.

Knowledge

A sound working knowledge of sport, preferably football;
Knowledge of elite athlete development, preferably football player development;
Understanding of Academy football and environment.
