Job Description

The Acetyls BU is one of the world's leading manufacturers of acetic acid and its derivatives, and owns & deploys its leading technology in Europe, Asia and US.

BP Hull Site is the European manufacturing facility for the Acetyls Business Unit and is of significant strategic importance to the Global Business. In addition to its focus on Manufacturing, BP Hull is also one of our principle global centres for Petrochemicals research, technology and licensing with activities supporting the whole of the SPU. The European Acetyls market is forecast to grow steadily over the next few years and the business is committed to a growth agenda to capture a substantial portion of this market growth. Our core product range is A cetic Acid and Acetic Anhydride.

The Research Chemical Engineer role is within a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the process development of SaaBre™ technology, a new process for the production of acetic acid, based in Hull, UK. The post holder will influence the process technology development across the full spectrum of activities, from experimental design, results interpretation from once through to demonstration plant scale, flowsheet development, process simulation and optimisation. In particular, the role will support the re-establishment of the demonstration plant operations through a period of re-commissioning and modification, developing the supporting models and tools to capture data and learnings, ultimately being play a role in the assurance and risk mitigation of the technology package through TCVP Execute. The role is fixed term contract for 9-12 months
 

  • Contributing to the delivery of safe, compliant and reliable experimental operations, and supporting the HSSE performance goals of Hull Technology;
  • Apply expertise to define process development opportunities to progress SaaBre technology and enhance the delivery of competitive advantage for the SPU, acting as SPA for selected activities and peer to support broader projects within the team;
  • Working closely with research and process development chemists to generate, evaluate and benchmark new process technology options and provide peer expertise to experimental programs;
  • Development and maintenance of the models and tools to capture and interpret process and separations data from the demonstration plant
  • Communication of experimental, modelling, and simulation results, and assessment of their impact on the viability of process development concepts;
  • Apply learnings from the demonstration plant and research program to influence and develop the progression of the commercial flowsheet, including contributing to the Definition of Technology (DoT) and commercial plant assessment projects
  • Input into the design and implementation of capability modifications required for the SaaBre™ demonstration plant;
  • Contribute to management of change, ideally as engineering and / or operations signatory


To be successful you'll need :

  • Degree/PhD in Chemical Engineering with experience of industrial process development, research, process scale-up and process simulation
  • Proven skills in process engineering, modelling and simulation;
  • Proficient in economic evaluations of existing and new conceptual process technologies;
  • Knowledge and experience of operations and engineering design;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully lead their own projects, develop innovative solutions, leverage team resources and deliver impactful technical results;
  • Good communication and collaborative skills, with the ability to contribute to the success of the team, foster learning, share ideas and build capability;
  • Ability to influence stakeholders and team members to build consensus and progress workstreams;
  • Experience / knowledge of BP’s stage gated Technology Common Value Process (TCVP);
