Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is looking to appoint its next Chief Executive (CEO). This is a high-profile role leading the largest public sector research establishment in the UK.
Dstl is an executive agency of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) providing specialist services to MOD and the wider Government, working collaboratively with external partners in industry and academia worldwide, providing expert research, specialist advice and invaluable operational support. The organisation has an annual turnover of circa £700 million, around half of which is spent with industry and universities, and more than 4,500 staff who are predominantly civil servants, and primarily scientists and engineers.
Reporting into the COO of MOD, the CEO of Dstl will lead a large, technically complex S&T organisation and work closely with a wide set of senior stakeholders including the Chief Scientific Advisor of MOD, Government departments, all Service Chiefs, across the industry, with technology organisations, academia and international stakeholders. The appointee will therefore bring excellent interpersonal and influencing skills to be able to operate at the most senior levels.
This is a highly visible role and will suit an outstanding senior leader who is both experienced and credible at the Board level. The successful candidate will have a track record of running a large, complex organisation or business unit of similar size, scale, and ambition. They will be able to set an inspiring vision and strategy for the future with a growth mindset, uniting and empowering colleagues to ensure successful delivery. Experience of operating within the Defence & Security arena is beneficial but not essential.
