Job Description

Education Scotland

Chief Inspector of Education for Scotland

Livingston, West Lothian

Senior Civil Service Pay Band 2

The successful applicant will lead Education Scotland in the new role that it occupies following the conclusions of the Scottish Government’s Education Governance Review, with an unswerving focus on improving performance within Scottish education.

We are looking for an outstanding leader of education to take forward what is a unique opportunity, contributing directly to the Scottish Government’s defining mission: delivering excellence and equity in Scottish education for the benefit of every child and young person.

The Chief Inspector of Education for Scotland will be responsible for leading Education Scotland with impact and authority, building an increasingly confident, respected and influential organisation.   The post-holder will demonstrate educational strength and act as a motivator of change and improvement across the education sector, ensuring high levels of engagement, empowerment and accountability at all levels within the system.

The role sits within the Senior Civil Service (SCS) Pay Band 2 and external candidates should expect their salary on appointment to be circa £112,000 per annum, dependent on skills and experience.  Salary and terms of appointment for an existing Civil Servant would be within the normal rules for appointment on level transfer or promotion. The headquarters of Education Scotland is in Livingston, West Lothian but there are offices around Scotland and some flexibility may be possible.
