Circa £70,000 per annum.

The post-holder will be a key member of the Forest Research Executive Board with shared accountability for our corporate strategy and activities whilst taking lead responsibility for science across the Agency.

Job Description

The post-holder will play a pro-active part in future direction and leadership of the Agency, ensuring the Agency has skilled, science professionals that it needs with an eye to the future. The post-holder will be required to foster talent, demonstrate strong leadership, inspire others about our future and our work, be confident in our engagement with our stakeholders and empower our staff to deliver. The post holder will also act as the formal Head of Profession for Science and Technology specialists working in the FC and FR and play a full and active role in the continued professional development of the FR science staff.

Specific tasks include:

Determine the strategic scientific direction and research strategy for FR;

  • ensure income generation opportunities for research are determined and delivered and liaise with other Departmental and Agency Chief Scientists and the Government Office for Science;
  • take lead responsibility for science quality assurance across FR; the delivery of the main science and innovation programme and negotiation of FR’s science capital budget from Defra;
  • anticipate and predict the long term impact of national and international developments and the associated strategic challenges they might pose for UK forestry in order to direct FR’s science offer.
