The Team

This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of an innovative new online learning service that Pearson has launched in the UK. Working in partnership with universities across the UK, the division provides online learning services including marketing, student recruitment, course content development, training and ongoing student support and retention. The team are currently going through a period of unprecedented growth due to a surge in demand for online learning and the recent launch of www.uklearns.com at http://www.uk-learns.com/ , a marketplace for a broad selection of high quality, career-focused online learning offerings.

The Role

We're seeking someone with sound financial knowledge, a flair for excel modelling, and superior critical thinking. The ideal candidate will be nimble and versatile and will relish a role that is diverse and evolving.

As a result of the rapid growth in our Online Learning Services business, we are looking for a Commercial Analyst who will thrive in a dynamic and evolving environment. This is a unique opportunity to act as an extension of Finance while being truly embedded within the business unit and would suit a recently qualified accountant who thrives in problem-solving mode and excels when operating in the “grey”.

The role will be diverse and evolving. As such the ideal candidate will live and breathe our values, be nimble and versatile with proven experience or capability in a business management, with a special focus on executive-level advising and interdepartmental collaboration.

To successfully deliver in this role, the Commercial Analyst will engage with POLS UK’s Leadership team, our Finance Business Partners and, where appropriate, the University’s finance team. This is a unique opportunity to act as an extension of Finance while being truly embedded within the business unit and would suit a recently qualified accountant looking for a more commercially focused role.

Key Requirements of the role:

  • Model scenarios and opportunities for existing university partnerships and the UK Learns site, including 1 year, 3 year and 5 year P&L budgets for each
  • Model 10 year scenarios to assess commercial viability of potential new university partnerships and new programme opportunities within existing partnerships, to inform selection and launch plans
  • Build short- and long-termforecasting models for student acquisition and retention using historical data sets
  • Maintain the commercial model and update as necessary to provide timely and accurate revised forecasts each Teaching Period.
  • Provide timely, accurate and insightful commentary for material variances from forecast and wider analysis that enable the Leadership Team to make informed decisions
  • Prepare the financial performance reports for both internal stakeholders and the partners.
  • Feed into negotiations on commercial terms with partner providers for UK Learns
  • Assess the veracity of invoices raised between the University or other commercial partners and Pearson.
  • Be agile, flexible and efficient in approach to managing workload and willing to perform varying duties depending on the shifting needs of the business

Qualifications

Key Attributes - Essential

  • Qualified accountant with strong desire to work in a commercially focused role
  • Strong analytical skills – ability to manipulate data and conduct analysis to provide meaningful, actionable insights
  • Advanced Excel/Modelling skills required
  • Inquisitive nature; pro-active approach to thinking through and solving problems
  • Focus on quality and smart ways of working
  • Strong communication skills: the ability to convey information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.

Key Attributes - Desirable

  • Good working knowledge of Salesforce CRM
  • Good working knowledge of Data Warehouses and Tableau or similar BI tools
  • Experience of working within an HE setting
  • Experience of working in a fast-growing start-up business
