Overview

The Premier League is looking for a commercial solicitor to work in its in-house IP enforcement team, assisting the business in protecting its broadcasting rights around the world. This will include working on all elements of the team’s enforcement strategy, particularly civil and criminal litigation pursued against those infringing the Premier League’s audio-visual rights.

We have a wide variety of responsibilities. These include organising the competition and its Rule Book as well as managing the centralised broadcast and commercial rights. The work we do in conjunction with the Clubs also goes far beyond the 90 minutes. We support and provide a framework for youth development, we protect the organisation’s intellectual property, support the wider game and community programmes, undertake international development work and liaise with governing bodies and other leagues.

The role

You will support the Head of Legal – Enforcement in formulating and implementing civil and criminal enforcement strategies to protect the Premier League’s audio-visual rights.

The role will involve working across all elements of the team’s litigation against those infringing the Premier League’s intellectual property, including services and their operators that provide unlawful access to broadcasts of Premier League matches. In addition to litigation support, you will assist with IP-related lobbying efforts and anti-piracy consumer awareness and educational initiatives.  

You will be required to work independently and be expected to oversee a variety of cases and related enforcement actions. Your efforts will be part of a broader global strategy and will involve regular liaison with other members of the enforcement team (in both the London and Singapore Offices) and external counsel.

Requirements for the role

High quality academic background and robust legal training from a reputable law firm or recognised in-house legal department.
Qualified solicitor of approximately 0-3 years’ post qualification experience (candidates outside this range with the required skills will also be considered).
A good knowledge and application of Intellectual Property laws, particularly copyright.
Experience in litigation, preferably in IP enforcement matters.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal issues and solutions in an articulate, precise and clear manner to individuals from all levels of the business.
An ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team, with a proactive approach to all tasks and responsibilities.  

Nice-to-haves for the role

Strong IT skills.
Familiarity with the issues and challenges facing the Premier League, particularly around piracy and the streaming of media across different delivery mechanisms.
Experience of working as part of an in-house legal department.
Demonstrable interest in and understanding of the football and broadcasting industries.
