You can achieve more at St Andrew’s Healthcare

A top 20 UK charity, St Andrew’s is a unique provider of specialist care in mental health and learning disability.  We aspire to deliver truly world class, holistic services within our outstanding, modern facilities.  Our independence means we can always put patients’ interests at the heart of decision making, while re-investing surpluses in frontline services.  We are currently transforming the Charity to deliver ‘Value Based Healthcare’.  This will focus on getting the best possible outcomes for patients, at the right balance of cost and resources.  It will also ensure local teams are in control of clinical and operational strategy.

The role

The Essex PICU, Mental Illness and Personality Disorders Service offers a gender specific treatment programme for women and male patients who require specialist forensic input. The site consists of 6 wards comprising of 79 beds, spread across the following wards: 2 Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (one male and one female), and 4 wards for the management of personality disorders and mental illness. There is a full multidisciplinary team on each ward, including a senior speciality doctor contributing to an individualised treatment package for the patients.

The service offers an excellent opportunity to deliver value-based healthcare focusing on clinical outcomes. The service is focusing on using clinically relevant outcomes that will support the recovery and progress of patients to less restrictive environments in line with improvements in their mental health and reductions in their risk.

The successful candidate will lead a full MDT and help shape services further through strategic decision-making and improvement projects. The site structure means that there is flexibility within the service to make decisions locally that will impact on how care is delivered. You will also be able to undertake research projects as part of St Andrew's commitment to innovation and world-class care, if this is an area of interest.  There is also the opportunity to undertake additional work via the St Andrew’s Consultancy service which provides medicolegal reports, and you will be supported by the service in this – this work is remunerated separately.

The number of patients under your care will be dependent on the number of sessions of employment. There is some flexibility around whether this is a full-time or part-time post (dependent on the preference of the successful candidate, and in consultation with the current Consultants already in post).  The post includes a non-resident on-call commitment (part of a two tier rota, with a specialty doctor based locally).

Applicants must have MRCPsych or equivalent and hold a CCT in Forensic Psychiatry or Adult Psychiatry.

The post attracts a competitive salary (with the option of additional remuneration for work undertaken via the St Andrew’s Consultancy service), 41 days of annual leave (including bank holidays) pro rata, a travel allowance and a contributory pension scheme (with additional employer contribution and included life insurance).
