Contracts Drafter/Paralegal - 3.5 month FTC

Provide legal support to the business and UK contracts team for self service content acquisition contracts. To include maintenance of templates and support materials, responding to queries on self service author, series editor and other agreements relating to content acquisition. This will involve collaboration with Legal, and business staff.

Review, analyse, edit, draft and provide commercial and timely advice on non-standard and/or complex contracts in support of Pearson’s Core business groups and enabling functions, largely (but not exclusively) relating to content acquisition, reviewing licences from trade publishers and other third parties, NDAs, MSAs anda wide variety of matters including live transactional matters as required by the legal team. Identify and mitigate potential risks to the company including issues and requirements such as royalties, confidentiality, intellectual property, and data privacy.

Support business in responding to claims from or disputes with authors or other content providers, including copyright infringement allegations, in consultation with line manager or other Legal Counsel, as appropriate.

Under direction from line manager, provide guidance to contracts co-ordinators as they manage and prioritise workloads, advise business partners on contractual terms, answering questions related to the contract, identifying and mitigating risk, resolving issues as appropriate, and working with line manager and other members of the Core Legal Department and internal clients, as necessary.

Make judgment calls to prioritise and escalate the most sensitive issues as appropriate.

Assist with any special projects that come into the Core Legal Department, under the guidance of the Senior Legal Counsel, including disposals (and acquisitions) of publishing lists.

Provide legal research as required by lawyers in the Core team and provide a weekly digest of legal know how updates.


  • Educated to degree level. Paralegal experience or qualifications are a plus.
  • Experience of a wide range of contract drafting in a commercial environment, preferably within the publishing / other rights-oriented market or the education sector.
  • Ability to work with various departments throughout the company as well as the wider Pearson Legal Department to coordinate legal responses.
  • Able to prioritise and meet short deadlines/turnaround times.
  • Thorough knowledge of: copyright and other areas of intellectual property, contract law, data protection requirements.
  • Decision-making self-starter, who is able to demonstrate initiative and commitment to working as part of a team.
  • Excellent PC skills, particularly using Word, Powerpoint and Excel.Experience of using databases, contract management tools, and/or bespoke systems such as PPM, EPM, Vista or similar.
  • Ability to prioritise a heavy and changing workload with excellent organisational abilities.
  • Work with accuracy, precision and close attention to detail.

  • The role will require you to work closely with editorial and other business teams, and with colleagues in the Core Legal team in London. Weekly visit to the Pearson offices in Harlow will be needed.
  • This person must be able to sit or stand at a personal computer for a reasonable length of time typing and reading.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of work in a short period of time, handle multiple priorities simultaneously and operate in a demanding work environment is important.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality is critical to successful performance in this role.
