Job Description

The Head of operations is a pivotal role for DSO. You will be in an exciting role, working in partnership with DSOs Regional Teams, posts overseas and other parts of government and industry to provide united HM Government support to UK security companies seeking to win export business across the world. You will act as the key facilitator for the wider strategic aims of DSO. 

This role has been introduced to give direction and focus, at senior leadership level, to the Operations Team. 

You will lead a critical central function of DSO, overseeing and driving DSOs broader performance, leading DSOs events programme, leading the intelligence and horizon scanning function for the sector and leading the Secretariat team, which includes provision of performance statistics, budgetary management and a variety of other corporate functions. This is the team that drives the overall performance of the Directorate and as such we need an extremely strong leader with the right capabilities to drive this. 

DIT’s Defence and Security Organisation (DSO) is made up of five teams, two geographic Regional Directorates (RDs), a Corporate Operations team, a Security and Cyber Security Team and a Military function. DSO has approx. 120 staff members which includes approx. 35 military staff (on loan from Ministry of Defence), and approx. Each RD has specialist military and security advisers who provide advice to overseas governments and UK Industry. 

This role will involve significant interaction with Ministers, senior industry representatives, overseas stakeholders and crossgovernment engagement. 

Key Responsibilities will include: 

  • Leading a varied and complex function, setting direction and driving performance across this function; 
  • Providing central strategy, leadership and direction for the entire DSO team, identifying opportunities to improve performance, based on metrics, across all DSO teams, working collaboratively with other team heads to achieve this aim; 
  • Leading for DSO on a number of important cross government groups, including The Defence and Security Exports Ministerial Working Group and the Committee on Arms Export Controls; 
  • Working closely with key stakeholders both outside HM Government and within. Key stakeholders across Government include the Cabinet Office, MOD and the Home Office; 
  • Managing the team who handle Parliamentary business and FOI requests for DSO; 
  • Leading on DSOs corporate functions including finance, MI and HR/ L&D. 
  • Deliver DSOs Key Account Management function to the major UK defence and security companies. This involves stakeholder engagement and relationship management with the most senior level in industry. You will need to, through your team, develop a programme of engagement in liaison with DSOs regional and security teams; 
  • Overseas travel to build, develop and maintain strong bilateral relations with overseas posts and customers; 
  • Providing senior representation at trade missions, security Industry days and trade shows. You will support the security and cyber security industries at UK based trade shows, hosting overseas delegations and offering opportunities for bilateral meetings in the UK; and 
  • Management oversight and responsibility for a budget.
