Director, East Region Facilities Management




The Director, Facilities Management reports to the Vice President, Facilities Management and is responsible for providing a broad array of facility services for multiple sites, buildings and campuses. This includes providing overall strategic support for multiple facilities that the Business Group occupies. Working in conjunction with Corporate Real Estate, insure lease renewals and pursuits for new space are managed in a timely manner and meet company objectives. Insures that remote facilities are supported as needed in times of renovation and when representation is needed for local and federal governments.

The direct management of facilities oriented services including mail delivery, security, telecommunications, reprographics, facilities planning, space allocation, life safety, energy management, emergency response planning, business continuity support, physical security, switchboard operations and reception, custodial, maintenance, furniture repair and procurement, moves and rearrangements and building environmental systems are the significant elements of this position’s responsibilities in the facilities. Additional support for risk management, critical infrastructure and change management.


Related work experience

Minimum of ten years experience in facilities management, including all phases of real, estate property management, lease administration, facilities planning, capital, and operating budgets, building operation, support functions such as physical security, mail service, and reprographics and minor construction in conjunction with occupancy moves and rearrangements.

Basic Qualifications (these are required to be considered an applicant for the position):

  • Bachelor’s degree in interior architecture, engineering, construction management or related discipline
  • 10 years professional training and development experience desired
  • Minimum five (10) years’ experience in a corporate or business facilities services setting
  • Certified Facilities Manager (IFMA) preferred
  • Certification from American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, including direct leadership of direct reports and the ability to guide and influence upward in an organization
  • Previous experience with managing complex Facilities Services and large projects and project management
  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, organization, presentation, problem solving, and decision making skills are required
  • Prior experience managing people required
  • Ability to adjust decisions/solutions to changing circumstances or new information
  • Must have ability to prioritize and complete tasks to meet business and/or contract requirements
  • Some positions require US Government security clearances and background checks
  • Frequent travel may be necessary

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (List in order of importance, and list amount of time spent on task):

Manage all aspects of Facilities capabilities. This position will require the right individual to provide leadership for facilities services and service level commitments, resource planning and training, and technology implementation to support our customers. This role will lead development, coordination and presentation of training and development programs and management development for the entire Facilities Organization.

  • Manage all activities involving building systems and services at Pearson sites
  • Liaison with Corporate Real Estate Facilities Management organization
  • Maintain and manage the relationships with all vendors providing outsource services
  • Manage staff of technical, administrative and maintenance employees
  • Coordinate requests from senior management, building operations management, technicians and contract, and contracted services
  • Manage contract work efforts including requests for proposals, contract documents, and vendor qualifications
  • Monitor overall compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations
  • Prepare financial and operational status reports
  • Oversee all construction services, project management and complex projects
  • Direct efforts involved in planning and designing space requirements
  • Develop, manage and control overall facilities capital and expense budgets
  • Responsible for planning annual department budget and planning annual staffing needs
  • Monitors Facilities Services processes and enables the team’s compliance with internal standards
  • Work with customers, stake-holders, and subject matter experts to gain an understanding of their business requirements and set appropriate priorities using requirements management tools and techniques
  • Work with proposal development team to compile response text and costs for customer RFPs
  • Review business requirements and set appropriate priorities using requirements management tools and techniques
  • Work with upper management and internal business units to plan and prioritize requirements based on business objectives, product objectives, market potential and customer needs
  • Work with department financial analysis to develop standardized unit cost and development of cost models
  • Evaluate internal and third-party technologies for best strategic fit
  • Assist with reviewing top-level system design to ensure completeness (meets requirements)
  • Understand and evaluate the impact of requirements changes on business priorities and on the top-level system design
  • Hires, coaches, and manages managers and professionals on a daily basis
  • Assessment of organizational training and development needs
  • Develop spending plans and monitor spending against the departmental budget
  • Exemplify the desired culture and philosophies of the organization

Frequent travel may be required, 12 month fixed term employee opportunity



Minimum of 15 years program management, business process and facilities management experience.

Knowledgeable in procurement, project management and property & facilities organizations.

Effective written and verbal communication skills and change management experience

Service provider, hospitality experience.

Ability to build project plans and monitor/report on project status.

Knowledge and competency in business processing mapping and documentation.

In-depth knowledge of facilities services, construction and third party outsourcing

Develops and maintains constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.

Additional Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree. MBA a plus

PMP Certification

  • Six Sigma training

Ability to travel internationally and domestically as needed (20-30%)
