The Director’s key responsibilities will be to:
Provide confident, empowering and inspiring leadership to a Directorate of around 130 people, based in London.
You will support the four team leaders to work as a team and manage the Directorate resources to best effect.
You will also provide visible and engaged leadership within the Energy and Security Group and the wider Department.
Ensure continued high levels of energy security. You will have direct responsibility for the operation and development of the capacity market through which we ensure we maintain sufficient capacity to meet peak electricity demand, but also ensuring continued levels of security for gas. Subject to Ministerial decisions,
you will lead and implement policy to close remaining coal generation in Great Britain. Working across BEIS, you will ensure that the Department as a whole has a robust and consistent approach to all elements of energy security and resilience. Reduce the costs of energy.
You will lead policy on the retail energy market, following a critical Competition and Markets Authority report, and on the action taken by the Department in support of more vulnerable consumers.
You will develop, agree and implement actions that will reduce other cost elements, such as network and system operation costs, in light of the results of the independent Cost of Energy review being undertaken by Prof Dieter Helm. Ensure efficient cross-border trade in gas and electricity.
You will ensure that the UK negotiating position in Brexit talks is well developed and robust, taking account of wider interests.You will continue to develop the pipeline of interconnector projects with other states where that serves the interests of the GB consumer, securing investments where possible. Develop a smarter energy system, as a key part of the industrial strategy.
You will be a joint SRO for the project to implement the actions set out in the Smart BEIS System and Flexibility plan published in July, facilitating the greater use of electricity storage and flexible demand to reduce cost and improve security.
Ensure robust underpinning evidence and analysis for the work of the Energy and Security Group. You will ensure that analytical tools and evidence are of top quality for the direct work of the Group and for our contribution to wider pieces of work such as HMT work on the carbon price floor, the Clean Growth Plan and the industrial strategy itself. The Directorate comprises four teams: Energy Economics and Analysis Energy Security Future Electricity Systems Markets and Affordability.
