Purpose of the position

The Director of Accreditation & Standards, is a technical expert senior lead for the assessment design, monitoring and standards of our qualifications, to develop a service culture within the unit. They will ensure that qualifications uploaded to the regulatory system are compliant with the conditions of recognition and are responsible for approving qualifications as suitable for regulatory accreditation. The post holder will lead on the setting and maintenance of standards across all qualification types. They will take a lead on people development and succession planning within the unit, provide strong leadership across the organisation and establish strong relationships and the Pearson reputation with those that regulate Pearson qualifications in the UK and overseas.

Core tasks and responsibilities

The key purpose of this role is to be take responsibility for ensuring that Pearson Education Limited's (PEL) qualifications are awarded securely and in accordance with the appropriate regulatory conditions.

To ensure adherence to regulatory requirements for standards setting and maintenance by leading an effective, integrated response by all of the teams engaged in the design and development of qualifications and assessments and award-related activities.

To act as an authority for the setting and maintenance of standards for PEL’s products and services, acting as the main contact point with the regulator on matters relating to the accreditation and awarding of our qualifications.

To successfully direct and lead the teams responsible for assessment design and standards setting; providing effective management, motivating the teams and identifying development needs to ensure the division meets its future business demands.

Accountable for ensuring that the design of assessments (external and internal) enable valid and reliable outcomes at the appropriate standard, that are compliant with the relevant conditions of recognition and approval for upload to the Regulatory IT systems.

Deliver the organisation’s general & academic and vocational awarding process; ensuring the accurate setting and maintenance of standards; ensuring best practice is followed and that a process of continuous improvement is embedded.

Collaborate effectively and with the individuals in the wider organisation who are directly responsible for the development and awarding of our qualifications to ensure success. Work productively with people at all levels to accurately identify the appropriate management information required to manage risk both for the division and for the business.

Effectively manage divisional budgets; ensuring projects and activities are delivered on time, within resource and to a high standard.

As a senior leader, act as a role model by building productive and trusting relationships, effectively representing the organisation with internal and external stakeholders, the government and regulators.

Key Accountabilities

  • Responsibility for ensuring that Pearson Education Limited's (PEL) qualifications are awarded securely and are delivered in accordance with the appropriate regulatory conditions
  • Ensuring that Self Regulated Framework qualifications fit the appropriate criteria and that the process minimises reputational (and, by association, regulatory) risk
  • Responsibility for ensuring that teams are have adequate learning and development on qualification development and awarding processes
  • Successful award of assessment and qualification outcomes for over 10 million assessments per year
  • Ensure excellent customer service and efficiency to support Pearson’s growth strategy
  • Effectively ensure that all of Pearson Education Ltd’s qualifications annually are approved in compliance with conditions of recognition
  • Progression of employees through development and talent management activity
  • Cost/Revenue/OI delivery on budget
  • Achieve or maintain IiP accreditation and high levels of engagement of people

Key relationships

  • As a senior leader, act as a role model by building productive and trusting relationships, effectively representing the organisation with internal and external stakeholders, the government and regulators
  • Lead role in supporting development teams to ensure that our qualifications are ‘validity audit-ready’ – that we have evidence that we have developed valid and reliable qualifications (includingsample assessment materials) that meet regulatory requirements
  • Lead role in supporting assessment teams on the active monitoring of our assessment strategies – that we have evidence that we continue to monitor and improve our qualifications during implementation (that our qualifications remain fit for purpose)
  • Lead external role with regulators (Ofqual, Qualification Wales, CCEA and SQA) representing Pearson at key meetings related to accreditation and standards of qualifications in the UK and internationally.
  • Lead external role with government ministries of education, representing Pearson both in the UK and internationally on standards related issues

Qualifications

Essential :

  • Expert in qualification development, assessment and standards setting and maintenance
  • At least 5 years experience in UK awarding and standards setting for assessments

Desirable

  • Assessment related qualification
  • Post graduate degree or equivalent in assessment or management related field
  • Experienced leader of people, with a track record for building and leading a team that delivers practical and impactful results
  • Natural collaborator – at ease with making connections and spotting opportunities inside or outside Pearson
  • Ability to ensure the organisation is actively contributing to Pearson’s UK priorities
  • Self-motivation and the ability to inspire others
  • The stature, energy and personal impact required to gain credibility with the confidence of key relationships at DFE, International Ministries of Education, Ofqual, CCEA, SQA, Qualification Wales and Teaching Unions and international regulators
