Job Description

We must strive to ensure that we maintain our military edge against our adversaries and we are transforming the way we support our armed forces and deliver military capability. This new role has been established to contribute to the development of UK policy towards Space and to design and implement a Defence Space Strategy, including by connecting activity across all parts of Defence.

Space is fundamental to the delivery of military capability and to the functioning of wider society, whether from processing financial transactions, to cloud computing, to monitoring the effects of climate change. The Defence Space portfolio is currently worth over £6Bn, including military satellite communications, situational awareness through RAF Fylingdales and planned ballistic missile defence radars, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets. The Director, Space will be responsible for providing direction and assurance of the Defence space portfolio, including managing risks and overseeing development of a Space workforce strategy and longer-term capability plans.

The successful candidate must be able to work across the policy, corporate and military capability spectra and maintain confidence in senior leadership both across Whitehall and with key Allies and international partners. We are looking for someone who enjoys operating with drive and determination and excels at developing policy and strategy, leading and building a high performing team and communicating.

We have no preconceptions as to your background or sector experience and are not specifying a detailed knowledge of the Armed Forces. While this is a challenging role which will require determination and excellent influencing skills, it also offers great potential to make a real difference at a critical time.
