The firm is organised into groups that undertake a general spread of work, encouraging lawyers to work on an extensive range of matters. Much of the work spans the globe, with transactions involving our overseas offices as well as leading independent law firms in many other jurisdictions.
The matters we work on are generally challenging and sophisticated. We do, however, aim to give associates as much responsibility and client contact as they are ready for. At your level we would expect you to be the day to day contact with a client, with guidance and supervision from a partner.
Structure of our Pensions and Employment practice
The department’s work has included the employment, pensions and incentives aspects of some of the largest corporate transactions (for example acting for Royal Dutch Shell on its £47bn combination with BG plc) or for Standard Life in its merger with Aberdeen Asset Management, as well as advising on business transfers, redundancies and corporate restructurings. On the advisory side, we advise our substantial corporate client base on the termination or appointment of directors and senior employees on enforcing restricted covenants and general employment advice.
Role and responsibilities
• Acting as the day-to-day contact for advising clients on a wide range of employment issues
• Taking responsibility for the employment aspects of corporate transactions of all kinds, including share and asset sales and outsourcings;
• Developing the practice by promoting the Firm and its work – both to existing and potential clients.
• Drafting, reviewing and amending the legal and commercial aspects of documentation
• Providing efficient professional support for partners
• Developing professional relationships with clients
• Supporting the wider team in developing business and raising the profile of the firm
• Managing/supervising the work of others including trainees
Key skills and attributes
• Works in a recognised employment practice
• Has between 0-5+ years’ post qualification experience in employment and is capable of substantial work with limited supervision
• Has a strong academic background and a demonstrable, high level of intellectual rigour
• Has experience in employment aspects of transactions and in dealing with employment issues in relation to directors and senior executives
• Could also have some pensions or share plans experience, but this is not essential - this is principally an employment role
