Do you want to help make East Anglia a better place to live and work?

As an Environment Officer you'll be an environmental advocate. You’ll spend time out on the frontline helping us to create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment. Your work will be vital to the protection of the environment and will be varied, challenging and rewarding.

You'll:
- Perform inspections of permitted waste sites such as scrap yards, compost facilities or skip companies.
- Ensure hazardous waste, especially harmful to the environment, is being correctly stored and moved to minimise the risk of contamination.
- Respond to large environmental pollution incidents like chemical spills or fires.
- Where issues are found, use your regulatory powers and influencing skills to address them.
- Update our suite of software systems to capture your findings.

Full training and mentoring will be provided. This is a career grade position – starting salary £23,446 increasing to £28,785 after demonstrating capabilities at an Assessment Panel and in a submitted portfolio of work. This typically takes 18-24 months.

The team  
We regulate waste management activities across a range of urban and rural sites in Suffolk and North Essex.

The current Environment Officers you’ll join in East Anglia are wide-ranging, from graduates to working parents to former emergency services personnel.

We currently have adverts for various offices in East Anglia. If you'd consider working from locations other than Ipswich, please indicate when asked in your application. NOTE - You do not need to submit multiple applications.

Experience/skills required  
We are flexible about your experience. You may be good at dealing with difficult situations, a new graduate or experienced in regulation. Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment and making a difference. You'll use environmental regulation and sometimes need to deal with confrontation.

Demonstration of the right behaviours is most important to us. We're looking for people who enjoy working both outdoors and in an office environment and can show us they are:

•Organised and able to prioritise.
•Self-assured.
•IT/computer literate.
•Willing to learn about environmental regulation and enforcement.

And can:
•Handle confrontational people.
•Adapt their communication style to suit others.
•Integrate into a team.
•Record information correctly.

A full UK driving licence is essential and transport for work visits will be provided.
