Job Description

The Environmental Specialist - Water will work to ensure the Toledo refining is operating at the highest levels of environmental compliance around the waste water systems. As part of the Refinery Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) team, you will be responsible for developing permitting and compliance strategies for meeting the Clean Water Act, and ensures the refinery is operating in compliance with all related wastewater requirements. You will work closely with the rest of the environmental team to help the refinery meet BP's goal of zero harm to the environment.

  • Manages the day-to-day refinery issues related to wastewater, such as strategies necessary for assuring compliance with all requirements of our NPDES (water) permit
  • Ensures timely and complete submission of applications, reports and other documentation to regulatory agencies
  • Shares accountability for oversight and direction of related environmental support services contracts
  • Conducts required inspections and tours of the wastewater treatment unit (WWTU), sharing recommendations for corrective actions as the result of observations or findings (provides assistance in the field)
  • Understands and is compliant with all Control of Work (CoW) and Process Safety policies and procedures
  • Serves as the refinery environmental contact for the assigned Operational Team
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding and interpretive capabilities for wastewater regulations impacting the refinery
  • Assesses and identifies optimal permitting and compliance strategies and establishes productive working relationships with the community and regulators
  • Provides technical and regulatory guidance to refinery management and staff regarding compliance with wastewater issues
  • This position is expected to communicate compliance obligations associated with wastewater treatment. The position will be involved with the Environmental Specialist - Projects to support permit application preparation and approvals, and working with the Community, Local, State, and Federal Governments to obtain the required permits
  • Provides guidance and compliance strategies for new projects or MOC's related to wastewater
  • Participates in PHSSER's, Readiness reviews, and PHA's
  • Manages the QQQ program

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required. Preferably in Environmental, Chemical, or Civil Engineering.

  • Five years environmental experience
  • A proficient knowledge and understanding of current wastewater regulation
  • The ability to work with groups (both internal and external)
  • Analyzing Problems/Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Systematically determine the root cause(s) of problems through questioning and inspecting, and then identify the best course of action to take
  • Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences to optimize or detect abnormal conditions within the process
  • The ability to multitask while performing job tasks, without being distracted
  • A proficient familiarity with QQQ rules and regulations
