Role overview:

Pearson created a dedicated finance shared service centre in 2016 as part of a major efficiency program. Pearson Financial Services (PFS) is a central component of global Finance Operations strategy within Pearson, which provides a full spectrum of financial services to our internal customers across the suite of Pearson business based within the UK and North America.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Finance Manager who will relish leading and developing a team of qualified and part qualified accountants to deliver month end close processes, annual statutory reports and support the SOX and internal controls framework processes across Pearson.

Responsible for financial control for North America and the UK, the Financial Reporting & Control Manager will work closely with their peers in the wider Pearson Finance Community and PFS to maintain the integrity of the financial accounting processes and controls.

Key responsibilities

Overall accountability for day-to-day Finance reporting and control team;

Monthly close the books activities including balance sheet reconciliations and review; accruals; prepayments; depreciation/amortisation and other accounting entries arising; operational accounting processes including inventory control and cost accounting for Pearson products and services.

Preparation of statutory accounts across a number of Pearson entities (both auditable and audit exempt) to an agreed schedule ensuring full working papers, and audit trail is maintained.

Hosting and facilitating the audit process across interim, P11 and final audit for a number of Pearson companies.

  • Undertake effective demand management processes to manage, prioritise, delegate and deliver an optimum service to the customer that aligns to their strategic requirements
  • Liaise closely with the PFS Governance Manager in order to maintain effective service delivery to PFS from the BPO centre in Bangalore;
  • As a member of the PFS leadership team, work to develop & continuously improve the services performed by PFS, constantly seeking further efficiency & effectiveness through standardisation, simplification & elimination as appropriate.
  • Lead, coach and mentor staff across the organisation.
  • Working closely with the Controls Centre of Expertise to deliver a robust internal controls framework and ensure that controls are tested at recommended intervals.
  • Adhering to financial reporting standards, and ensuring self and team remain up to date on current technical requirements.

Key Capabilities:

Financial Acumen and Technical Skills:Strong background in financial reporting under IFRS and US GAAP. Experience in multi jurisdiction accounting policy interpretation and compliance, preparation of financial statements and performing analysis of the results

Analytical Skills: Well developed analytical skills, ability to review and analyse financial data and explain results to senior management.

Managerial Leadership/Building Skills:Able to work cohesively in a matrix structure. Ability to mentor, coach and develop key staff. Ability to deal with ambiguity and be able to motivate the team with periods of uncertainty and/or change successfully.

Leadership: Strong communications skills and leadership qualities to lead a large team and execute on multiple deliverables.

Continuous Improvement:Execution oriented Process improvement mindset and able to deal with and anticipate change.

Service Delivery: strong background in developing and maintaining a robust service delivery capability. Managing short and longterm operational goals to deliver effectively for ‘customers’ ensuring that performance metrics are achieved.

Qualifications

Key Experience:

Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with experience working with and partnering senior stakeholders. Preferably with an audit background;

Leadership skills to promote and drive functional strategies and operational excellenceideally within a Shared Service Function;

Commercial focus, and the ability to apply business acumen to innovate, solve problems and achieve results;

Highly developed relationship and influencing skills both internally and externally at a senior level, and able to build business capabilities through effective stakeholder management;

Able to manage business and financial risks and controls within areas of accountability and ownership, within agreed risk appetites/tolerances;

Excellent line management skills including managing team development and supporting individuals' personal and career development. Recruiting, retaining and motivating staff to build a high performing team;;

Ability to work autonomously demonstrating initiative and sound judgement;

Managing third party services and supplier relationships;

Strong Finance Operations / service centre background within a complex, global organisation;

Experience/knowledge of ERP systems (preferably Oracle R12 including, Oracle Hyperion Planning and OBIA);

A track record of successful senior stakeholder engagement and negotiating successful outcomes;

Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels.
