Job Description

The post holder will typically support front line officers investigating major crime by discussing the investigation with them to establish what has happened thus far. The post holder will then offer investigative advice on legislation, policy, tactical options and evidential opportunities based on published guidance, established and/or emerging good practice and their experience. 

Provide operational support, advice and guidance to police throughout the UK into the investigation of major and serious crime. Provide in-depth advice and guidance on a range of digital media-related opportunities including but not limited to digital/cyber forensic examination, open source, cyber tools and techniques to assist major and serious crime operations and investigations, and maximise opportunities to assist internal and external partners, in accordance with current legislation. 

Ensure national / local strategy, policy, legislative frameworks and operational priorities are developed and promoted amongst NPCC, Law Enforcement partners and government departments (as appropriate).Work collaboratively with Senior Investigating Officers (SIO’s) in the investigation of major and serious crime and high profile cases. Act as a single point of contact through the DMI network concerning Digital Media investigations providing appropriate advice and support to SIO’s 

To supervise a team of Research Specialists who have an extensive knowledge of policies, good practice, NPCC guidance, relevant law enforcement and government documentation to deliver consistent, up-to-date information to assist forces in their decision making. 

Individuals will have the below knowledge and experience: 

  • Detailed knowledge of the Digital Media Investigator role including communications data and current and emerging technology 
  • A comprehensive working knowledge of the strategies and techniques involved in the acquisition and disclosure of communications data and the use of digital media in major and serious criminal investigations 
  • Significant recent experience in utilising a wide range of digital media strategies in support of major and serious criminal investigations and a comprehensive working knowledge of the techniques involved in the acquisition and disclosure of digital media and communications data.
