This role offers high levels of personal impact, working as part of the executive leadership team of the Financial and Risk division in shaping and leading transformational change.

Financial & Risk (F&R) at Thomson Reuters 
Thomson Reuters F&R provides solutions to the financial and risk community and corporates, delivering critical news, information and analytics, enabling transactions and connecting communities of trading, investing, financial and corporate professionals. These key services are delivered based on their unified platform, which includes their flagship desktop and enterprise offerings (Eikon and Elektron). 

Today, F&R accounts for over half of Thomson Reuters’ global revenue across twelve different markets and solutions, led by David Craig in London. They help their customers generate superior returns, improve risk and compliance management, increase access to liquidity and create efficient, reliable infrastructures in increasingly global, electronic and multi-asset class markets.

The Role – Global Head of Strategy and Business Development, Financial and Risk 
Reporting directly to the Thomson Reuters Chief Strategy Officer and to the President of Financial and Risk, and as one of eight members of the Executive Leadership Team for F&R, this role enjoys a high level of personal impact. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for the continuous development of the overall strategy of F&R. In particular, they will

  • Deepen our understanding of the customer, competitive and regulatory environment, interpret it, and formulate the strategic response to the changing world
  • Evolve the overall strategic direction for F&R, and its fit within the overall strategy of the Thomson Reuters Group; including vision, market selection / “where to play” and competitive positioning / “how to win”
  • As a member of the Group Strategy team, collaborate on shaping the overall Thomson Reuters strategy
  • Directly lead major strategic initiatives, such as developing break-out growth strategies, supporting major proposition assessment and strategies in support of proposition teams, supporting GTM, conducting major business reviews, or identifying and developing major restructuring opportunities
  • Oversee other strategy initiatives and the M&A activity within Financial and Risk, and help other members of the Executive Leadership Team to shape the strategy in their areas
  • Together with the F&R President, and as a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), lead the interaction with the Group Executive Committee and the Thomson Reuters Board of Directors
  • Work with Finance to translate our strategy into a long-term financial plan
  • They are supported by a growing F&R Strategy Team representing an opportunity to build and develop that team, and bring in additional talent to support the candidate.


Career progression
This role is attractive for candidates with two different career aspirations. As the head of strategy for the largest Thomson Reuters business unit, It offers opportunities to develop as a strategist, and as a leader of business change, it offers the opportunity to transition into a business leadership role.

Compensation 
Compensation will be set to attract and secure high calibre individuals for this demanding role. It will comprise a base salary, performance related bonus, and optional pension contribution. 

Location / Travel 
The role and the team are based in Canary Wharf in London, but will require global travel. Qualifications

Profile sought

This role requires a strong combination of strategy skills and knowledge of the financial services industry. The candidate also needs a commercial mind-set, an entrepreneurial approach, and has to be able to build trusting relationships from day one. He/she will also be happy to ‘roll up their sleeves’ to drive projects to completion and shape outcomes directly, as well as possessing the ability to engage broadly and act through influence, backed up by expertise and data.

 

Skills and capabilities

Broad Industry experience: strong appreciation and experience in the evolution of capital markets infrastructure, investment management, and the trends in this space, through:

  • Either: Financial services, in particular banking, asset management, trading or: Technology, information and other solution providers that serve this industry
  • Understanding of customer and user needs around trading, investing, capital raising, and risk management
  • Strategy experience:
  • Experience in a leading strategy firm or in a strategy function
  • Experience developing a portfolio of strategies for a business or clients

Problem solving & analysis:

  • The successful candidate will possess a strong intellect and have the ability to breakdown complex problems in a logical and highly structured manner
  • They will take ownership for entire strategy projects and can develop the overall ‘story’ from individual insights, data, and analysis
  • They will be numerate, and comfortable to lead business and financial modelling
  • They will possess good business sense, with a good instinct for what’s important
  • They will be comfortable with ambiguity and apply a hypothesis-driven approach to problem solving

 

Communication and stakeholder management:

  • The successful candidate will be a polished communicator with the gravitas and maturity to develop strong relationships and influence senior stakeholders as well as large groups
  • They will be able to present an overall strategy in a compelling way at executive and board level.

  • In depth knowledge of Thomson Reuters Products & Services
  • In depth experience within both the Financial Services and Technology industry
