Position Purpose:

Global Corporate Affairs & Marketing (GCAM) communicates Pearson's unique position as the world's learning company, while building strong and enduring relationships with our key stakeholders around the globe. We focus on helping to strengthen our reputation with policy makers, influencers, the general public, and our employees. We ensure that our brand, communication, digital, and marketing efforts are being driven with global consistency. Collectively, our work is anchored in building a strong global Pearson brand with social purpose at its heart.

We are looking for an experienced communications and government relations professional to take on the role as Government Relations Manager, support the Director UKGR on all aspects of strategic internal and external outreach and communications, helping to build understanding and excitement around these businesses’ ambitious strategy throughout Pearson. You will also partner closely with others, including key stakeholders in the UK and experts across GCAM, to deliver communications in support of business results.

Reporting to the Director UKGR, you will be part of a team of government relations and communications professionals to help shape Pearson’s profile overall, specifically across the UK markets. Collaboration, partnership and active stakeholder management is foundational to success in this role. Primary responsibilities:

  • Working with Director UKGR, develop, refine and implement a proactive Government Relations strategy for Pearson’s UK business - In the UK Pearson is organised into three core divisions: Schools (including the Qualifications business); BTEC & Apprenticeships; Higher Education)
  • Oversee the maintenance of up-to-date stakeholder engagement systems and structures - providing regular status reports to the Director UKGR and VP Corporate Affairs
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with key external partner organisations on programme delivery - such as roundtables, external events, and research projects
  • Support the join-up with media and digital teams to ensure information sharing and consistency of internal and external messaging
  • Manage oversight of high-level briefings and stakeholder meeting preparation
  • Serve as the day-to-day GR contact for Pearson within the UK Corporate Affairs function and the wider UK business, and external stakeholders
  • Manage the stakeholder engagement programme for senior leaders, working with others in corporate affairs and across Pearson

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Previous experience in a policy-focused communications or government relations role in the UK
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of UK political and parliamentary practice, gained from a previous role in the political sphere or a relevant in-house or agency position
  • Proven experience in using data, thought leadership, technical experts and other tactics to bear on influencing policy
  • Experience interpreting data and insights, and using those to drive strategy and approach
  • A track record of building trust and sustaining excellent internal and external relationships
  • Proven ability to support senior executives (e.g. verbal and written briefings, drafting speeches etc)
  • Experience of handling high pressure issues management and managing a complex and fast changing portfolio of responsibilities
  • Demonstrable project management skills and experience
  • Strong understanding and experience of evolving social media best practice
  • Broad understanding of education issues, especially of the UK education policy landscape
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work well cross-functionally
  • Solid interpersonal skills including experience of briefing and interacting with senior leaders
