The Head of the Estates Strategy is responsible for maintaining a comprehensive view of the entirety of the Defence Estate and providing strategic advice to MOD on current and future opportunities and challenges across it.

Job Description

The successful candidate should possess proven leadership and management credentials, and the vision, strategic and intellectual capacity and personal stature to enhance the DIO performance. They will be a strategic thinker, and will balance seeing the big picture with an innate curiosity and desire to understand our customers and improve DIO business performance. They will combine experience in estate strategy skills with the intuition of an experienced and well-rounded senior manager. They will have an open manner with a ‘no surprises’ management style which will build trust and respect amongst their colleagues at all levels throughout the MOD. Specific experience and achievements should include:



  • A proven track record of success in the property industry and at substantial experience working at a senior level in estates / infrastructure function;
  • Excellent leadership skills, role modelling the Civil Service Leadership behaviours by dedicating time to support and empower people, sharing expertise, building capability and promoting a positive and engaged working culture;
  • Proven track record of winning and retaining the confidence of senior stakeholders and in successfully managing conflicting views;
  • Demonstrable experience of having operated at the strategic level, developing both a compelling vision and the supporting strategy and/or policy to support it;
  • Proven management of change programmes in a complex environment, inspiring teams to successfully deliver across functional and organisational boundaries;
  • Experience of building a culture of continuous improvement and high-quality customer service. Skills and personal attributes:
  • It is desirable you are a graduate with membership of a relevant professional body;
  • A flexible, inspirational and effective leadership style with the professional credibility to command respect and confidence within and outside of the DIO. An emphasis on performance management and personal development of staff;
  • The ability to grasp the complexity and diversity of the MOD estate and translate strategic vision into reality. The self-confidence, humility and curiosity to ask questions of colleagues across the MOD in order to build understanding and knowledge;
  • A professional advisor who can engage effectively with customers, external bodies, and private sector partners. Articulate, diplomatic and persuasive with an ability to use fact based evidence as part of influencing skills;
  • Highly visible and approachable in style. Ability to work collaboratively whilst providing constructive challenge and holding others to account. High levels of personal integrity honesty and openness and with the confidence to represent the DIO externally at a high level
