The role of the Head of Regulation is to build productive and positive relationships with our UK and International regulators, provide expert guidance to the Responsible Officer and other senior internal stakeholders and lead on all regulatory issues for the Pearson qualifications business.

The responsibility for ensuring that Pearson meets its regulatory obligations lies with the Regulation Team and in this capacity it acts as a primary point of contact on regulatory and governance matters for the business and qualification regulators both in the UK and internationally . The team also has responsibility for the management of the appeals process and for the endorsement of resources for regulated qualifications. The Regulation Team sits within theBusiness Improvement and RegulationDivision. The Head of Regulation reports to the Director of Business Improvement and Regulation and works closely with Pearson’s Responsible Officer.

The role is based from the 80 Strand office, but travel will be required on a regular and sometimes short notice basis across all primary Pearson sites and the offices of our key external stakeholders.

Core tasks and responsibilities

  • Interpreting and analysing regulatory requirements, including Ofqual’s General conditions and SQA principles, and evaluating their impact on our business
  • Working with colleagues around the business to ensure that regulatory requirements affecting our qualifications are clearly understood and have been embedded in business processes and documentation
  • Influencing the regulatory environment by representing Pearson at meeting with the regulators or other external stakeholders
  • Managing day to day relationships with the regulators, including the escalation of adverse events
  • Day to day management of Pearson’s regulatory governance arrangements, including responsibility for completion of Pearson’s annual Statements of Compliance to the regulators
  • Ensuring that Pearson has an up to date suite of regulatory policies that meet regulatory requirements as well as the needs of the business
  • Delivering effective and efficient processes in relation to the appeals process and the management of conflicts of interest
  • Ensuring we have a robust and independent process for endorsing resources produced by Pearson and third party publishers
  • Providing strong leadership across the division and specifically for the regulation team
  • Representing Pearson in a variety of forums involving internal and external customers, including the Joint Council for Qualifications
  • Undertaking the lead or support of specific projects as directed by the Director ofBusiness Improvement and Regulationor the Responsible Officer

Building and maintaining positive and constructive relationships with our regulators and across the business is key to this role. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at a senior level are therefore essential

Previous experience:


  • Experience in a senior management role working within a regulatory environment
  • An excellent understanding of the UK regulatory framework for qualifications
  • Team leadership experience
