Healthcare Assistant – Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

From £16,485 - £17,462 
Career Level: Core Contributor (Band 2)
37.5 hours per week

Psychiatric intensive care units (PICU) are inpatient psychiatric wards that provide mental health care and treatment of patients with acute and enduring mental health issues.

Our PICU services provide tailored treatment programs that are developed to recognise each individual’s strengths, needs and risks, with specific emphasis on treating mental illness and starting the recovery process.

Your role with us

As Healthcare assistants working in a PICU, you will be supporting staff teams in delivering and focusing on our Patients and their rehabilitation, daily activities and care. The role can be quite active and challenging and we would therefore require you to be able to cope with the demands of an active post.

There is the opportunity for you to apply to our Aspire Programme, a nursing bursary programme, which could support you while training to be a qualified nurse. Each year we provide the financial and development support for 20 of our employees to gain a Nursing Degree.

Your profile

There are no set entry requirements to become a Healthcare Assistant but there are skills and personal characteristics needed.
To be a Healthcare Assistant in mental health care, you will need to be:
  • Resilient
  • Caring and kind
  • Cheerful and friendly
  • Willing to do personal care tasks (washing, toileting, etc.) in some areas
  • Able to follow instructions and procedures
  • Able to work in a team but use your own initiative

You'll also need:
  • Communication and listening skills
  • Organisational skills
  • Observational skills
