The role of Indirect Tax Manager is to provide Indirect Tax advice and support to global Group companies in managing their global indirect compliance and filing obligations.

The Indirect Tax Manager will work as part of the Pearson Global Indirect Tax Team and will report to the Director, Global Indirect Tax.

The Indirect Tax team ultimately reports into VP - Tax Business Support.

The role will involve both compliance and demand led work, including working on a range of projects to support global tax risk management.

Main activities/responsibilities:

Responsible for management of defined global VAT & GST compliance activities including:

  • Preparation of UK, EU and non - EU VAT/GST returns and associated filings and where appropriate, working with external advisors to ensure accurate and timely submission of the returns (including MOSS).
  • Documentation and implementation of VAT compliance processes to provide continuous support and improvement on indirect tax compliance for Pearson.
  • Preparing/reviewing data analytics and trend analysis of VAT/GST return information.
  • Oversight and support of wider global VAT/GST compliance activities undertaken within Pearson Finance Services (PFS), with a view to continuous improvement in processes and controls, and supporting/driving an automation agenda.
  • Considering opportunities for further standardisation of processes using Avalara reporting tool and supporting any agreed implementation.
  • Provide support to wider Indirect tax team on VAT audits and tax office enquiries.
  • Responsible for key activities relating to VAT accounting.
  • Support any necessary Oracle E-B tax logic changes that are necessary resulting from legislative or business change.
  • Assist with global mapping exercise to identify indirect tax risks and opportunities.
  • Dealing with global ad hoc queries from the business in relation to indirect tax and working on tax projects as required.

Key interactions:

  • Working with key finance stakeholders in the business
  • Interaction with VP Tax Business Support, Director Global Indirect Tax, PFS Indirect Tax Manager, and other Tax Department members – regular contact
  • Working with Pearson Finance Services (PFS) and IBM (outsource provider)
  • Liaison with external advisors

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Qualified tax consultant or accountant with experience working with big four or tax authority.
  • Strong technical ability - fully conversant with relevant global Indirect Tax legislation.
  • Familiarity with major accounting systems.
  • Computer literate with advanced excel.

Must be able to demonstrate the use of the above skills, experience, knowledge and qualifications over reasonable period of time.

Desirable:

  • Accounting experience
  • Experience with and ability to work with Oracle
  • Partial exemption experience

  • Professional, enthusiastic and energetic
  • Able to think globally, the suitable candidate should have gained exposure to other global indirect taxes e.g. EU VAT, Sales tax, GST etc.
  • A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to carry through varied projects to a satisfactory conclusion.
