About the job

This is a 2 year fixed term contract, designed specifically to provide the apprentice with the skills and experience required to perform the role of Project Manager on IT projects; a key element of this being hands-on technical experience. The Level 4 Apprenticeship in Project Management will be completed during this 2 year period, with 20% of the working week dedicated to Apprenticeship study.

The IT Project Manager Apprentice will benefit from 18 month’s hands-on ‘lifecycle’ experience across Pearson’s UK Qualifications IT department, before taking responsibility for delivery of small IT projects. The Apprentice will also gain some experience of Programme Office tasks, to gain full understanding of the remit of project and programme management within an organisation.

Lifecycle assignments are typically as follows :

  • 4 - 6 months per assignment
  • Business systems analysis, system testing, production support, or management of Agile delivery by offshore Dev & QA teams
  • Reporting to an assignment manager, who is a specialist in that role
  • Hands-on roles within large-scale IT project or support teams
  • Focussed on developing detailed knowledge and understanding of software and hardware concepts and delivery methodologies

Project characteristics are typically as follows:

  • Business transformation-focused projects, supporting Pearson’s business and technology strategies
  • Delivery of the bespoke solutions, using a combination of in-house and outsourced/offshore teams
  • Prince2-style governance and controls, including Project/Programme Boards, stage gates, and investment appraisal
  • Agile development methodologies

Qualifications & Experience

  • BSc degree or equivalent, preferably in STEM subjects
  • An interest in technology
  • Previous technology experience is desirable

Skills & Abilities

  • Exposure to stakeholder management and effective spoken and written communication skills
  • Experience in working with teams in disparate locations
  • Detail and results-orientated
