Summary of role:

This is finance position supporting the VP Finance in acting as a Business Partner to senior leadership within the Global Product organisation.

Global Product is responsible for global portfolio management, global digital product strategy, digital product management, and the Global Learning Platform across Pearson. It is responsible for product development for global English courseware and assessment, and English language HE courseware, supporting portfolio strategy and providing best practices for school courseware and services, and for production services for all global and local courseware products.

Global Product Finance partners with the Global Product leadership team to develop strategies and plans, direct investment activities, produce financial reports and ensure financial controls are maintained to drive decisions to deliver shareholder value.

The total operating cost base for Global Product is about £130m, together with about £200m of platform and content capitalised development spend, including related areas such as Product Technology. The product development efforts support HE Courseware revenues of approx. £1.3bn.

Main activities/responsibilities:

  • Support VP Finance, Global Product as a business partner to senior leadership, advising on financial matters and ensuring delivery of business andoperational objectives
  • Collaborate with the Value Realisation Office ("VRO") on management of Product Portfolio set up and tracking of project structure, budgeting/forecasting, and tracking of actual results. Understanding of cost base and the ability to apply to financial analysis and business case support.
  • Oversight of actual monthly results and KPIs and review informed and insightful commentary for a number of areas within Global Product.
  • Highlight key risks and opportunities within functions and providing insights
  • Support decisions on project and portfolio investments, ensuring they are measured against financial targets
  • Manage Balance Sheet budgeting/forecasting, Annual Impairment Reviews, and frequent risk assessment of balance sheet
  • Identify and address operational improvement and cost opportunities. Contribute and support to Global Product Finance transformation initiatives as required.
  • Develop and prepare financial business cases with support from PFS. Support decisions on pipeline investments, ensuring they are measured against financial targets
  • Work collaboratively with PFS to deliver key reporting, planning and forecasting processes providing accurate and timely future facing data on which to base decisions
  • Understand the businesses regulatory and audit requirements and ensure they are adhered to
  • Consistent and extensive collaboration within Finance and across Pearson, including colleagues in Geographies, Assessments, Enabling Functions, Country hub operations and Centres of excellence organised at the Pearson level
  • Management responsibility for one temporary Business Analyst, directing, supervising and reviewing work to ensure that it is performed to a high standard.
  • Ensure the business always remains in line with control standards

  • Accurate and timely delivery of investment and business cases and follow up activity

  • Strong collaboration with Product groups, Geographies, Assessments, Enabling Functions, Group Control, Finance Centres of Excellence and with embedded Finance teams across Pearson
  • Improved forecasting and planning efficiency and accuracy
  • Leverage of analytics tools to focus organisation on value-added activities

Qualifications

  • Deep accounting knowledge – qualification as an accountant or MBA degree
  • Proven business partnering experience (3 years )
  • Well proven ability to conduct business case and investment analysis and capital asset evaluation
  • Qualified with demonstrable experience in management accounting role
  • Experience in a project accounting environment – preferably Oracle Project Accounting
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Interpersonal and presentational skills to deal comfortably with strong personalities at senior levels of the business operationally and financially.
  • Experience of working in a multi-national matrix organization including establishing good working relationships across multiple business areas
  • Strong understanding of materiality and ability to prioritize across competing agendas
  • Ability to identify business risks and implementation of tactics to mitigate
  • Understanding of financial control, business performance management and process optimization and experience of working in more than one of these areas.
  • An understanding of putting internal financial results into an external market context.
  • Awareness of multiple business models and experience of working with more than one.
  • Understand the principles of change management and demonstrated ability to champion and drive change
  • Experience in supporting digital product development
  • Understanding of finance specialist areas: tax, treasury, M&A, compliance, corporate governance and ability to utilize proper judgement to involve them as necessary.

  • Experience of OPA / Hyperion / OBIA (preferred but not required)
  • Excellent Excel skills
