Manager, Learning Design for Assessment

The Manager, Learning Design for Assessment will be part of an elite team dedicated to innovating on research-based assessment approaches to content design in order to optimize learning within Pearson’s next generation of evidence-based, global technology products. The Manager, Learning Design for Assessment will collaborate with product managers, portfolio managers, data scientists, product model managers, user-experience designers, and educational researchers on a portfolio of technology products that includes platforms, underlying systems, learning applications, courseware, content collections, mobile solutions, and adaptive learning environments.

The Principal Learning Designer, Assessment will be responsible for five key functions:

  • Lead efficacy-driven research-based assessment design innovations (30%)
  • Synthesize and apply principled design practices and other academic research, in conjunction with analytics, to design assessments, assessment strategies, and learning patterns within digital next gen learning experiences and to the systems that support that content design process (30%)
  • Create design concepts in conjunction with learning designers, UX designers, product managers and content developers (15%)
  • Participate in the learner validation, and subsequent iteration, of concepts to support the optimization of product components and learning capabilities through content and assessment design within titles (15%)
  • Contribute to other design, development, research, and evaluation tasks, as needed (10%)

The Manager, Learning Design for Assessment must be an independent and technically-adept problem-solver, who can juggle multiple high-volume responsibilities with great autonomy and initiative in a remote environment, while always demonstrating exceptional communication skills and a solution-oriented attitude amidst a dynamic climate of rapid change. This position requires strong project management expertise, exceptional virtual office skills, and outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Pearson Learning & Experience Design utilizes a dynamic model of flexible capacity in which this position may be requested to lead or contribute to other development efforts depending upon product release schedules. Thus, preference will be given to candidates with complementary skills in diversified areas related to online learning, visual design, innovation, and design thinking.

This is a remote position.


Formal education or equivalent experience:

  • Doctorate degree in Learning Science, Cognitive Psychology, Educational Technology,, Assessment and Measurement, Learning Design, or related field preferred . Masters required.
  • Minimum of 3 years leading initiatives in assessment, measurement, efficacy, educational research, learning technology, digital learning environments.
  • Significant experience gathering and applying peer-reviewed scholarly research and user research
  • Significant experience in psychometrics preferred
  • Previous online and/or classroom teaching experience preferred


  • Knowledge and experience using principled design practices (e.g., Evidence-Centered Design) in new forms of assessment
  • Consults and trains others on design of traditional and new forms of assessment
  • Deep and demonstrated knowledge of research methodology, measurement science, and psychometrics
  • Demonstrated experience designing assessment within digital learning experiences
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating effectively
