We focus on commercial losses and claims in the aviation, energy, marine, property, casualty and special risk markets, many of which are large and complex in nature.  These include onshore and offshore energy claims, maritime casualties, aircraft losses, large infrastructure claims and financial lines losses. 

We currently have an opportunity for an individual to head up our marine technical services team and oversee the operation and development of the marine technical services division. This is a truly exciting, newly created opportunity which reports to the Managing Director of our Marine division. You will be responsible for consolidating our marine surveying business and working on the strategy of a new client offering in the market. This is a hands-on role, where you will act as a senior surveyor who is billable, whilst managing the business plan, budgets, business development and a growing team. 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing our marine technical services product worldwide
  • Managing the product as well as a regional technical team
  • Carrying out desktop reviews.
  • Providing technical advice.
  • Producing reports as requested.
  • Attending casualties wherever in the world they may occur.  

Financial Management

  • Assisting the Managing Director with the preparation of a business plan, including goals, objectives, targets, timescales and financial information.
  • Providing to the Managing Director monthly updates regarding the Technical Services department. 
  • Monitoring chargeable output (WIP) recorded by individual marine surveyors and the Technical Services department as a whole and ensuring that all WIP is invoiced as soon as possible. 
  • Monitoring and controlling entertainment expenditure, ensuring that it does not exceed what is reasonably required to develop and maintain client relationships.   

Client Management

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients.
  • Addressing complaints in a timely and professional manner, ensuring that these are thoroughly investigated, properly reported, and appropriately resolved.

People Management

  • Working with the Managing Director and Human Resources department to recruit appropriate personnel to the Technical Services team where required.
  • Conducting regular and timely performance reviews including setting objectives, reviewing progress and identifying training requirements and career objectives.
  • Mentoring and supervising individual Marine Surveyors in the Technical Services team, ensuring that training needs are fulfilled and that new employees receive all necessary induction training promptly.
  • Ensuring that staff maintain a high level of client focus at all times and provide high quality service to clients (internal and external) at all times.

Person Specification

  • Experience of working in the Marine Industry, preferably from a seagoing background as a Chief Engineer.
  • Experience of managing a large multi-jurisdictional team, including of people, client and financial management, and business development.
  • Ship surveying experience.
  • Ability to prepare detailed technical reports and other written communication.
  • Willingness to travel (internationally)
