The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) are recruiting for Operational Managers to join our teams across Scotland.
You’ll play a key role in supporting our organisation to achieve its vision of Unlocking Potential and Transforming Lives and in helping us to deliver our corporate plan. In practice, this means you’ll be a values based leader with accountability for a residential area or function within an establishment and responsibility for a large team of First Line Managers and front line staff. You’ll also act as Duty Manager, covering the entire prison on a shift basis, making all necessary decisions and overseeing incident management as required. This will involve ensuring the highest levels of safety and well-being (physical and mental) for both your team and the people in our care, as well as creating a supportive environment that fosters growth and provides opportunities for development. This role offers a real opportunity to make a difference to the lives of those in our care, but also of the staff you will be working with.
Key responsibilities for the role:
You will provide values based leadership, which inspires and empowers. You will act as a role model, using emotional intelligence to challenge inappropriate behaviour and support the personal and professional development of others.
You will be accountable for the overall management of the systems and resources, which enable the safe and secure supervision of prisoners in accordance with Prison Rules and Directions within given area. You will be responsible for staff’s well-being, including ensuring health and safety standards are met within area of responsibility.
You will build constructive and respectful relationships both internally and externally. You will proactively manage stakeholder relationships and networks to develop the service; acting as a positive representative for the organisation and the SPS values in all interactions.
You will produce high quality analysis through deciphering and interpreting a variety of both qualitative and quantitative data to inform decisions and actions, aligned to SPS objectives and prison establishment priorities.
You will be accountable for the drive and delivery of area of responsibility’s agenda under the establishments Annual Delivery Plan. You will be responsible for the translation of national and local corporate policy into operational actions within area.
You will implement and promote change, which builds the SPS vision and values. You will ensure staff engagement prior to and during change; supporting those resistant to change and empowering those who embrace it.
You will have experience of providing values based leadership to others. You will be able to direct, inspire and empower others to deliver positive outcomes through others.
You will have experience of leading a team of managers in a highly complex environment, whilst managing multi-faceted operations and stakeholders and ensuring rules, regulations and legislation is implemented and adhered to.
You will have experience of driving change, whether through small incremental steps or larger change management processes. You will be able to demonstrate a positive attitude and be able to overcome barriers and resistance.
You will be able to communicate effectively and build positive working relationships with a diverse range of people.
You will be able to work with complex information from a variety of sources, including qualitative and quantitative data, to identify root causes, trends and the bigger picture.
You will have strong planning and organisation skills.
