Product Manager (Primary Professional Development)


About the Team

The professional development team is a small, dedicated, supportive and knowledgeable group of people who work together to produce and ensure the delivery of excellent courses which support Pearson’s suite of primary digital products including Bug Club, Abacus and Rapid. In your team you’ll work with a wide range of people including fellow professional development specialists, product managers for key brands, marketing and sales colleagues, and colleagues who work on the operational delivery of our courses. You’ll report into the Head of Primary Literacy and Professional Development. This role is based in Oxford, and may require some UK based travel.

About the Role

Working across the key primary subjects, you’ll use your expert knowledge of primary teaching and learning to ensure that face to face and online courses, and PD materials, are written, developed and delivered to the highest quality standards. As a member of the PD team you’ll have your finger on the pulse of the latest educational developments and pedagogical trends working with product managers to ensure these developments are reflected in our products and supporting courses.

You’ll support the primary learning services team to achieve revenue and retention targets by ensuring maximum usage of our digital services, and you’ll develop a strong feedback loop to ensure products and courses are the best they can be. You’ll also contribute to the development of PD strategy for primary learning services, exploring innovative ideas about pricing, packaging and delivery models; and you’ll contribute to demand planning for existing and new courses, working with colleagues in operations to ensure demand can be fulfilled.

When required, you will work with your fellow Professional Development Specialists to manage our freelance associate trainers, quality assure course deliveries, deliver training on new courses and products to our trainer pool, and write and deliver presentations, training sessions and support materials for sales teams. You may also be required to deliver customer facing presentations such as live webinars.

A day in the life…

In this role you will be required to undertake the following activities:

Course/Content Development and Management

Work with colleagues in product management to understand the pedagogical underpinning and structure of new products and services, and to develop courses to support the successful use of those products and services in schools.

Contribute to concept workshops for professional development courses.

Where required, work with with series editors and key authors for products and services to develop a framework for associated professional development courses, embedding research and best practice where appropriate.

Commission course content from professional authors, key series authors and series editors.

Author course content for new products and services, in liaison with product management colleagues, including content for face to face and online delivery, delegate materials and handouts, and trainer handbooks.

Liaise with product management over any product improvements or changes which impact the delivery of professional development, and ensure that necessary changes are made and communicated to associate trainers.

Ensure delegate packs are created, maintained and kept up to date for the suite of professional development courses on offer.

Work with marketing colleagues to ensure marketing collateral on course offerings is kept up to date and accurate.

Budget and Project Management

Gather information about new proposals from all sources, including market research, liaising closely with product managers to understand needs.

Provide the Business cases for new proposals for PD and revenues,

Manage project timescales, course quality and budgets, and delivery.

Work with colleagues in Training from Pearson to forecast demand for existing and new courses

Work with colleagues in product management to ensure coherent pricing and customer experience is applied across courses.

Customer Experience

Respond to feedback on courses received via course evaluations and associate trainer reports, improving or amending course content where necessary to ensure a positive feedback loop and excellent customer experience.

Where required, respond to specific customer feedback against courses.

Market Knowledge and Insight

Keep up to date with the latest pedagogical research, trends and changes in key primary subjects, curriculum changes in the four UK markets, and changes in teacher training and development, and share this information with the wider team including product management.

Keep up to date with the changing needs of schools in relation to professional development, considering budgets, changing schools structures e.g. MATs and Teaching Schools to ensure that ongoing PD offerings are closely aligned with customer needs.

Build and maintain your network of contacts and influencers in primary education.

Management of Associate (Freelance) Trainers

Contribute, when required, to the recruitment, training, motivation and quality assurance of Associate trainers delivering our suite of courses.

Deliver training to associate trainers on new courses, and changes to existing courses, to ensure trainers are confident and well informed when delivering courses.

Contribute, when required, to the organisation and running of trainer networking events.

  • Provide advice and information to trainers regarding curriculum change, pedagogical research and funding initiatives.

And undertake other responsibilities or tasks as reasonably assigned.


Who are we looking for?

Someone with the following skills and qualities:

Teaching experience (preferably at primary level) and teaching qualification. Desirable to have held a position of additional responsibility within a school setting e.g. head of department, deputy head teacher, head teacher, adviser.

In depth knowledge of the primary education sector, market, including issues around pedagogy, curriculum and school improvement.

Excellent organisational and project management skills: the ability to plan and manage projects and budgets.

Outstanding communication skills and the ability to build relationships with, and influence,, a wide range of stakeholders both internally and externally.

Willingness to travel on occasion.
