Job Description

Research Fellow - 2018 Summer Internship

Description

At Pearson, we’re committed to a world that’s always learning and to our talented team who makes it all possible. From bringing lectures vividly to life to turning textbooks into laptop lessons, we are always re-examining the way people learn best, whether it’s one child in our own backyard or an education community across the globe. We are bold thinkers and standout innovators who motivate each other to explore new frontiers in an environment that supports and inspires us to always be better. By pushing the boundaries of technology — and each other to surpass these boundaries — we create seeds of learning that become the catalyst for the world’s innovations, personal and global, large and small.

OVERVIEW:

Pearson is offering an 8-week internship in the summer of 2018 for two doctoral students with outstanding research skills who wish to gain experience in large scale educational assessment. The internship will include hands-on experience working with operational K–12 assessments that range from traditional paper-based to computer based and/or adaptive. Specific activities will include a broad array of experiences having to do with all aspects of assessment development, maintenance of score scales, and technical reporting.

DATES:

The 8-week internship will take place from June 4, 2018 through July 27, 2018. Selected interns should be prepared to commit to the full eight-week term.

LOCATIONS:

Two of the following locations: Iowa City, Iowa; Austin, Texas, and San Antonio, Texas.

INTERNSHIP GOALS:

Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with a team of Pearson research scientists to:

  • Gain applied experience on many of the tasks involved in supporting an operational K–12 assessment contract;
  • Collaborate on a research paper, abstract, or presentation for national dissemination;
  • Enhance understanding of ways to collaborate and communicate about educational measurement.

AWARD:

The award includes a stipend. In addition, a housing and transportation allowance will be provided for interns commuting more than 50 miles. Interns are required to secure their own housing and transportation.

Qualifications

Interns should be currently enrolled in a doctoral program in educational measurement, educational statistics, educational psychology or a similar program. Two to three years of doctoral-level coursework is required. Interns should have strong written and verbal communication skills. Pearson summer interns may not participate in other summer internship or externship programs concurrently.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Please submit a curriculum vita, copy of graduate school transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose describing your interest in the internship. All application materials must be received by February 23, 2018. Internship awards will be announced by March 16, 2018. Materials can be scanned and attached as additional documents in the cover letter fields of the online application.
