Senior Economist – EM or Senior Economist – APAC (ex-China)

The role-holder will act as a senior economist in the Macro Research team.

Job Description

Role Purpose:

You will research macroeconomic, political and regulatory developments and contribute to the development of  a “house” view on the macroeconomic and monetary policy outlook, focusing on EM or APAC (ex-China) economies, propose investment strategies and ideas to the investment teams, communicate macroeconomic and market views externally and help to strengthen our investment culture and promote our brand.


Key Responsibilities/Areas:


 Macro Research:

  • Research macroeconomic, political and regulatory trends and developments in EM or APAC (ex-China) countries.
  • Analyse EM or APAC (ex-China) macroeconomic news and provide input to investment teams in order to support their decision-making and alpha generation.
  • Conduct bespoke research assignments for investment teams.
  • Research longer term, thematic subjects.
  • Produce research papers and contribute to the fostering of thought leadership.
  • Build strong relationships with investment teams and other research teams/staff in order to help to better coordinate research across the organization.


Economic Outlook:

  • Work with other members of the Macro Research team to develop a “house” macroeconomic and monetary outlook, involving full economic modelling of major DM and EM or APAC (ex-China) economies, taking the lead on assigned EM or APAC (ex-China) countries.
  • Work with other members of the Macro Research team to develop risk scenarios, in coordination with the investment teams.
  • Debate and constructively challenge other team member views in order to build stronger conclusions.


 Investment Strategy:

  • Propose investment strategies and ideas to investment teams, as a result of the macroeconomic research of the team.
  • Participate in investment meetings, and contribute to the investment debate, challenging constructively, where appropriate.



  • Communicate “house” macroeconomic and monetary policy views and risk scenarios to investment teams, and to other internal staff more generally.
  • Communicate investment views and strategies arising from this macroeconomic research to investment teams only, for use as an input into their investment decision-making. 
  • Communicate “house” macroeconomic and monetary policy outlook, and investment team market views, to external clients, prospects and consultants.


Investment Culture:

  • Contribute to the strengthening of our investment culture by promoting collaboration between investment teams, exchanging information, ideas and research, fostering internal investment debate, constructive challenge and actively participating in investment meetings.
  • Promote thought leadership through writing research, white papers etc.
  • Communicate regularly, and help to encourage an open, transparent, constructive and collegial culture.


Brand Promotion:

  • Contribute to the raising of IP’s profile through marketing, client events, media contact, industry conferences etc.
  • Help to promote our brand through the publication of thought leadership pieces and other research papers.


Essential Skills/Competencies:

  • Degree in Economics, or financial discipline
  • Experience in an economist role, preferably covering one or more emerging countries.
  • Strong econometric and analytical skills, experience of economic modelling
  • Developed industry knowledge, strong understanding of financial markets
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Presence and stature to interface with the most demanding institutional audiences
  • Ability to influence and convince
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
