SUMMARY

Responsible for developing major components for Literature/Literacy programs. Develops prototypes and program content with limited supervision. Creates scope and sequence, writes and edits manuscript, prepares art and photo specs, reviews production stages, and ensures quality of all content. Enlists and manages freelancers and authors as necessary. Ensures that the component or portion of the component is completed on time, on budget, and in alignment with original product vision.

SCOPE AND IMPACT OF JOB

Strategy and Planning

The Senior Editor participates in the planning efforts, focusing on the component or portion of the component under his or her supervision, but also providing input other components where appropriate. The Senior Editor is responsible for writing prototypes and developing product specifications. The Senior Editor is expert in the subject matter for his/her assigned area and, in combination with the appropriate editorial staff, uses that knowledge to help ensure that the plans are both highly competitive and instructionally sound.

Development

The Senior Editor is responsible for oversight of the execution strategy that will ensure that the component he or she is in charge of is completed on schedule and on budget. This may involve working with other staff, recruiting outside writers, and/or determining an outsourcing strategy. The Senior Editor is responsible for providing clear guidelines to the writers or outside developers. And the Senior Editor is ultimately responsible for editing or rewriting the material as necessary to make sure that it is of high quality and meets the product vision.

Supervisory responsibilities (direct and indirect)

Plans for and manages in-house staff (as appropriate), freelance writers, and/or outside vendors.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, prototype, and edit instructional materials.
  • Develop accurate, supporting digital content.
  • Supervise writers and/or development houses.
  • Monitor appropriateness of instructional materials for reading level, content accuracy and currency, freedom of bias, and teachability.
  • Write and provide art (and tech art) specs for artists and photo-researchers. Participate in evaluation of sketches and choice of photos.
  • Working with Product Management and Marketing, analyze competition and market trends and incorporate findings into program.
  • Ensure compliance with state standards and assessments.
  • Participate, as appropriate, in market research efforts (e.g. prepare sample lessons, conduct phone interviews, attend focus groups, etc.)
  • Participate in planning assigned projects; make creative suggestions that reflect an understanding of the market place and an awareness of customer needs.
  • Ensure that product responds to customer needs.
  • Provide marketing support, as appropriate, that may include sales and conference presentations, correlations to state guidelines, and workshop support for departmental products.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Related work experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience with instructional materials development or in an editorial capacity within educational publishing.

Formal education or equivalent

  • A BA/BS in a related field. Master’s level degree preferred, but not required.
  • Teaching experience is strongly preferred.

Skills

  • Proficient user of computers and software programs including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Understands Pearson budgeting, project approval, and production processes.
  • Able to be strategic and efficient in planning and meeting schedules, budgets, and accuracy/quality goals.
  • Highly experienced in curriculum materials development, in instructional design development, and in the visual delivery of instruction.
  • Knows how to translate knowledge of literacy and literacy teaching into formats that meet customer needs.
  • Strong problem-solving skills in dealing with ambiguity in a fast-paced setting.
  • Proactive in anticipating, evaluating, and solving for issues to avoid disruptions in workflow.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, strong team-building skills, and strong leadership skills.
  • Prepares and runs team meetings effectively, setting appropriate agenda, keeping everyone on task, and listening to all views.
  • Able to respond quickly in an environment of changing priorities. Must be able to set relevant priorities on a daily basis as the job requires multi-tasking.
  • Commands work habits that are highly productive, working efficiently to develop quality content.
  • Able to articulate a “customer focus” in working with the team to conceptualize marketable product. Must be able to turn great ideas into concrete product plans that fit the time-frame and resources available.
  • Able to actively pursue innovation to create literacy instructional products of the future.
