The Senior Instructional Designer position resides within a specific discipline Product Development team, which is responsible for the development of K-12 programs in that discipline. Reporting to the Director, Instructional Design & Technology, K-12, the Senior Instructional Designer will assist in managing the processes of digital product conceptualization, budgeting, development and production. This process begins in the prototype phase and extends through a production phase, in which the Senior Instructional Designer collaborates closely with print and digital production colleagues. The candidate should have an excellent understanding of various Instructional Design methodologies and tools, and be able to apply creativity and sound instructional principles to solutions. The Senior Instructional Designer may also lead other Instructional Designers on various projects.
The work of the Senior Instructional Designer will impact K-12 education by helping to bring 21st century learning to market. The decisions made by the Senior Instructional Designer will influence the success of the Business Unit product offerings. The scope of the work will encompass everything from print products to computers to Interactive Whiteboards to mobile devices to platforms and devices not yet available.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
A bachelor's degree in educational technology, instructional design, communications or related field. Masters degree preferred
5-7 years of instructional design and development experience, preferably in the field of education.
Knowledge of instructional design principles and experience executing those principles.
Excellent communication skills, strong analytical and verbal communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Possesses an eye for detail and able to manifest ideas into a tangible form.
Experience writing highly detailed requirement documents.
Strong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) and other workflow and storyboard tools.
Highly organized and able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
High degree of flexibility and tolerance for change.
Ability to lead and collaborate actively with others on cross-functional teams.
Understanding of the software development process.
Expertise in documentation creation and management.
Prior experience with Content Management Systems.
Ability to develop innovative approaches to complex design problems.
Work with editorial experts to develop instructional design plans that support program content within digital program platform and print components.
Work with User Interface team to design how content will be presented, organized and accessed within the program.
Work with Prototype Production team to create prototypes of digital content.
Work with Research and Usability Testing teams to ensure instructional design principles are validated as part of formative evaluation.
Review content in development to ensure functional specifications defined by the Senior Instructional Designer have been executed.
Participates in cross-functional teams to provide and receive input on how to instructionally enhance the content.
Recommends and provides guidance on new instructional formats and technologies.
Makes independent decisions to select processes and tools.
Follows current trends and research on innovations and developments in the fast-moving field of instructional design.
Advises on and implements process improvements.
