Our School Assessment team at Pearson, has an excellent opportunity for a Technical Development Lead-Senior Software Engineer to join our growing team in San Jose, CA. Working in a small-team environment, you will have a unique opportunity to work on world-class, cutting-edge applications and services in the realm of automated spoken and written assessments.

To be successful in this role, the candidate needs to lead an agile team, tackling the challenging design and development problems. In this highly collaborative role, the candidate will need to work closely with stakeholders, end users, and functional and technical onsite/offshore teams in order to deliver our mission critical, web-centric solutions.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work as team lead for a small cross-functional team of analysts, developers, and testers delivering web apps and web-centric solutions
  • Lead the team in designing and developing effective, maintainable, high quality code in a timely fashion
  • Research product development options and provides analysis for product direction
  • Analyze requirements, designs, technical complexities of new features and enhancements
  • Develop technical designs and solutions. Guide team members with the implementation and verification
  • Shepherd products/solutions though a complete product lifecycle: requirements gathering, design, development, release and maintenance
  • Coach, mentor, motivate, and supervise team members, and contractors


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities to be Successful in this Role:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • 7 years of demonstrable experience in developing Web-centric applications
  • Strong understanding of software development processes, procedures, and technology
  • Proven experience leading technical teams and ability to drive software engineering best practices
  • Excellent technical analysis and problem solving skills
  • Solid knowledge in OOP and software design methodologies
  • Thorough understanding of architectural and implementation principles for web app and services development
  • Strong programming skills in Java and Play, Spring, and Angular frameworks
  • Solid experience in JavaScript, HTML/HTML5, CSS, jQuery, Ajax, Flash, Bootstrap
  • Experience in MySQL and MongoDB databases
  • Experience with Tomcat and Puma application servers
  • Knowledge of Linux, cloud technologies and architectures including AWS
  • Very good knowledge of web presentation technologies
  • Ability to work in a quick paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent communication skills - written, verbal and graphical

Additional Pluses:

  • Working knowledge of Ruby on Rails programming
  • Familiarity with Resin, Tomcat, Puma application servers
  • Experience in application tuning and elastic scaling
  • Experience working with computer audio including knowledge of audio formats and audio recording systems
  • Speech recognition technology, natural language processing
  • Docker, CloudFront, Jenkins, Ansible and Terraform deployments
  • Oracle a definite plus
