Job Description

Subject Leader

The Team

The General Qualifications Assessment team is responsible for the delivery of GCSEs and A levels as well as a range of other qualifications in the UK and internationally. We work with examiners to set examination papers, train and monitor examiners and then ensure qualifications are marked and awarded so that candidates everywhere get the right results.

The role

The Subject Leader (SL) is responsible for managing the assessment process for qualifications. Reporting to the Qualification Delivery and Award Manager (QDAM), and working as part of a subject team, the collective aim is to deliver a professional and customer focused service.

A day in the life of

The Subject Leader’s role is varied and alters throughout the year depending on the cycle of assessment delivery. SLs will attend team meetings, manage and lead their allocated subject and support the Subject Co-ordinators in the team. SLs may be involved in projects set by the QDAM or Head of Department and will work collaboratively across the department.

Other typical activities are:

-Overseeing Question Paper/Assessment Material production and sign-off to a deadline for a qualification or set of qualifications

-Quality monitoring of examiners and their marking of the examinations

-Ensuring timely escalations to the QDAM on adherence to schedules or on regulatory matters

-Managing their own training and seeking advice and support from their QDAM

-Identifying efficiencies and quality enhancements in processes

-Working collaboratively within own subject team as well as across the wider Assessment team

The role is based in our High Holborn office. A typical working pattern is Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours a week. Weekend working is required at busy times throughout the year with time off in lieu available. We ask our SLs to be flexible and work across qualifications and the wider department as required.

Who we are looking for

SLs tend to have a range of experience in assessment roles such as a teacher or departmental lead in a School or College, or some other role in the education sector. On some occasions they will have moved into the role having increased their knowledge and skills whilst in a Subject Co-ordinator role. Regardless of experience, they will be motivated to lead external examining teams and be effective communicators. The General Qualifications Assessment team is friendly, non-judgemental and open, with a strong emphasis on teamwork.
