The Team

The Technical & Professional Assessment Department are a team of 40 people, responsible for Pearson’s suite of Skills, Work-based learning, Higher Nationals, Apprenticeship, Technical and Licence-linked qualifications. We have a strong team ethos and collaborate to ensure we deliver against our goals.

The role

The Subject Leader (SL) is the Pearson officer responsible for managing the delivery of internally assessed, competence based qualifications, working closely with a team of Senior Standards Verifier and Principle Standards Manager. The SL will also lead various allocated projects to support the quality assurance model.

The SL will report into the Qualification Delivery and Award Manager (QDAM) and will work with a team of other SLs and Subject Coordinators (SCs). Collectively the Department’s aim is to deliver a professional and customer focused service.

A day in the life of (most appropriate for entry to mid-level roles)

Days can vary greatly - but the focus is always on ensuring validity of certification for learners, whilst providing excellent customer service to both internal and external customers. The SL will also be expected to lead on projects set by the QDAM. Other activities to be expected are:

  • Managing a group of Standards Verifiers and Senior Standards Verifiers for your particular sectors and working closely with the relevant Principle Standards Manager
  • Managing the production of training and standardisation material for Standards Verifiers within your sectors, leading material review meetings, and ensuring the live events run smoothly
  • Reporting to the QDAM and the rest of the team on allocated projects on a weekly basis, raising risks and issues as required and offering potential solutions
  • Responding to queries and issues from centres and internal customers within set timescales
  • Using a variety of systems to investigate various customer queries
  • Reviewing assessment material such as new specifications
  • Identifying efficiencies and quality enhancements in processes and proposing these to the QDAM
  • Attend weekly team meetings
  • Represent the QDAM in meetings as required

Who we are looking for

Subject Leaders come from a variety of backgrounds, but ideally should have experience of working with competence based qualifications and quality assurance models. It’s key the individual demonstrates excellent customer service with excellent written a verbal communication skills, with the ability to take ownership of issues through to resolution. It’s critical the individual is able to build excellent working relationships with their team of Standards Verifiers and Senior Standards Verifiers and also internal colleagues to ensure activities are completed to time and quality. Subject Leaders will also be managing various projects to support the Quality Assurance model, and therefore the individual should have experience on delivering small to medium sized projects. A key attribute to any successful Subject Leaders is the ability to recognise any issues / improvements required, and to fully implement the required solutions. On occasions Subject Leaders will also have progressed from the role of Subject Coordinator. Regardless of prior experience however, the individual will be enthusiastic, able to work collaboratively with others, and a good communicator. The department is friendly, non-judgemental and open.
