Job Description

As part of the Architecture team within CDIO (chief information officer group) within HMRC, you will be working across one of the biggest IT estates in Europe responsible for designing, implementing and continuously improving HMRC’s key architectural domains, transforming HMRC’s IT capability. You will also provide strategic insight into the creation of HMRC’s business strategies and help shape business thinking around exploitation of the IT Architecture in relation to delivering HMRC’s transformation. 

You will have a good understanding of what is meant by Enterprise IT Architecture and be enthusiastic and keen to develop a career in the IT Architecture profession as well as being a logical and structured thinker and having a keen interest in technology and how it can enable business outcomes.  
You will be a team player with an aptitude and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team but also be prepared to work with minimal supervision and be prepared to work to achieve, professional IT qualifications such as TOGAF or CITP.

The role will provide the right candidate with stretching architecture responsibilities and experience that will give them the opportunity to develop their architecture skills. Future career path opportunities include potential to progress into a Solution Architecture role or specific architecture specialisms covering Data, Application, Integration or Infrastructure domains. The successful candidate will have or develop the skills to: 

• Be a good communicator and able to describe technical issues to non-technical stakeholders and conversely be able to understand and liaise with technical specialist 
• Work collaboratively, under the supervision of senior architects to undertake structured analysis of business issues and translate these into technical designs. 
• Identify and own design related issues/problems, ensuring that these issues are resolved in a proactive way 
• Advise business stakeholders on the HMRC IT Strategy and the broader technology landscape 
• Support the development of Technology Roadmaps 
• Work collaboratively with business and project stakeholders. 
• Understand governance process for solution architecture and approval at various stages in the project life cycle such as shaping, pre-discovery, and build. 
• Understand and elicit high-level functional and non-functional requirements of solutions, working with key stakeholders and business analysts. 

Essential Knowledge, Criteria and Skills 

Demonstrable experience in one or more of the following: 

• Understanding of the role of Enterprise Architecture discipline and application of the discipline within business environment. 
• A sound, broad knowledge of IT and an understanding of how the architecture specialism relates to other areas of IT and how it impacts on other business functions. 
• Worked in non-architectural roles within IT Change Projects such as business analysis, project management or software development 
• Ability to identify core IT capabilities to support business requirements.
• A basic understanding of evolving IT Technologies such as Social, Mobile, Cloud, AI and Advanced Analytics. 
• Business and commercial awareness and excellent communications skills.
