Leading event for diversity professionals takes place in London on 20 April
The Home Secretary, Theresa May, is to give the keynote speech at the UK’s leading event for senior professionals working in diversity. The Stonewall Workplace Conference – which is supported by Barclays – takes place on 20 April at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, London.
Stonewall’s Workplace Conference, a key event for diversity and HR leaders, shares cutting-edge good practice and thought leadership on sexual orientation issues with delegates. Now in its eighth year, sessions include the importance of role modelling and what it takes to top the Workplace Equality Index and be named Employer of the Year for gay staff.
Stonewall Deputy Chief Executive Laura Doughty said: ‘The employers who attend the Workplace Conference know that people perform better when they can be themselves. Many of them are members of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme, which promotes best practice – but the conference is open to every employer who wants to learn how to get the best out of their people.’
Other speakers this year include the Chair of Sports Wales, Laura McAllister and Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill. The Conference event will also hear from Beth Brooke, Global Vice Chair (Public Policy) at Stonewall’s Employer of the Year 2012, Ernst & Young.
Booking is open online - to find out more visit the Stonewall website.

MI5 enters Top 100 for the first time
Stonewall today publishes its Top 100 Employers 2012, showcasing Britain’s best employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. Ernst & Young tops the list. In second place is the Home Office and Barclays comes third.
MI5 secures a position on the Top 100 for the first time, and is one of 25 new entries. The 2012 Index was revised with the most demanding criteria to date, introducing new weighting for global employers that recognises worldwide support for LGB equality.

Accenture wins the award for Employee Network Group of the Year and the Department of Energy and Climate Change is named Most Improved Employer. Bill Payne, former Chief Executive of Metropolitan Housing Partnership, was named Individual Champion of the Year.
Full results of the 2012 Stonewall Top Employers list will be announced tonight (January 11) at a ceremony hosted in London by Ernst & Young where the Top Employer award will be presented by Minister for Equalities, Lynne Featherstone, MP.
‘Competition for a place in the Top 100 was fiercer than ever this year,’ says Ben Summerskill, Stonewall Chief Executive. ‘With new, more demanding criteria, every employer securing a position in the Top 100 has performed impressively – and the participating employers collectively employ over 1.9 million people. The Index remains a powerful tool used by Britain’s 1.7 million gay employees and 150,000 gay university students to decide where to take their talent and skills.’
Liz Bingham, Managing Partner for People at Ernst & Young, said: ‘A strong commitment to diversity and inclusiveness is not only important for our people, but is also a business imperative in what is an increasingly competitive and interconnected world.’
Jonathan Evans, director general of MI5, said: ‘The Security Service has worked hard in recent years to promote equality and diversity across all areas of its work. We are pleased to be recognised by Stonewall, but there is still more we can do. We will continue to support lesbian, gay and bisexual staff to make MI5 a truly inclusive place to work.’
The Index is based on a range of key indicators which this year included a confidential survey of lesbian, gay and bisexual employees, with over 7,500 participants. This consistently confirmed that the satisfaction levels of gay staff were highest at the top-ranking organisations in the Index.

Stonewall today launches two new tools for lesbian, gay and bisexual jobseekers completing the charity’s suite of resources for gay people moving through education and their careers. Proud Employers, a job site with posts exclusively from LGB-friendly employers, joins the Starting Out Careers Guide, which is now in its seventh edition and available online and in print.
Proud Employers has vacancies from the 600 major employers who are members of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme and is supported by founding partners including Barclays, BP and Credit Suisse.
Starting Out is targeted at lesbian, gay and bisexual students, graduates, jobseekers and career switchers in Britain. All employers profiled in the guide are Diversity Champions and have committed to supporting their gay staff and creating inclusive workplaces.
Laura Doughty, Stonewall Deputy Chief Executive, said, ‘Attracting, developing and retaining the most talented staff is key for all of the employers Stonewall works with. By advertising vacancies on our dedicated site or showcasing why they are an employer of choice in the careers guide, these employers directly reach out to lesbian, gay and bisexual talent, who look for employers who recognise that people perform better when they can be themselves.’
Thousands of copies of Starting Out, supported by Credit Suisse, are being distributed to students’ unions, university career services, employment agencies and university lesbian and gay societies and sixth forms across Britain. The websites are integrated, with vacancies available on the Proud Employers site also appearing on the relevant employers’ profile on the Starting Out site. And for the first time the guide is divided by sector, so that jobseekers can locate employers more easily.
Starting Out and Proud Employers are a part of Stonewall’s suite of resources for LGB people whether in education or employment. Other tools include Gay By Degree which profiles the support each university offers for gay students.

Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill, has been nominated as Britain’s ‘Most Admired Charity Chief Executive’ in Third Sector’s annual ‘Most Admired Charities’ awards. The awards are voted for by chief executives of charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises, rather than a panel of judges. Continue reading »
